A House of Prayer, a Listening Heart: Building Covenant Belonging
Like Samuel the Lamanite climbing the walls to warn a people, we are called to build – to raise up houses of prayer and hearts attuned to the voice of the Lord. Listen to how women from diverse backgrounds are finding strength and belonging through covenant study.
The walls of Jerusalem stood as a barrier, yet Samuel the Lamanite found a way to pierce through, to deliver a message of warning and a call to repentance. Ammon, at the Waters of Sebus, faced a daunting task, yet his courage and faith prevailed. These echoes resonate across the ages, a constant reminder that the work of building – of gathering – demands boldness, a willingness to climb, to face the unknown, and to trust in the Lord’s provision.
Recently, I’ve been reflecting on the power of covenant belonging, spurred by a deeply moving conversation on the Grounded podcast.
Creating a House of Prayer
Leah's unexpected calling to the Young Women General Advisory Council—a text message leading to a profound experience—illustrates the Lord’s way of drawing us into His work. It wasn’t about grand pronouncements or complicated strategies, but a simple willingness to accept, to serve, and to seek understanding. That's the Stone cut without hands—appearing when and where needed, shaped by the Master's hand. Building a house of prayer isn’t about bricks and mortar, but about cultivating an atmosphere of reverence, a place where hearts can turn to heaven.
The Listening Heart
The podcast highlighted the vital importance of a listening heart—a heart attuned to the voice of Christ. It's easy to be caught up in the doing, in the striving, but true progress comes from pausing, from seeking His guidance, from recognizing that He hears us, heals us, and loves us unconditionally. Like the five smooth stones David gathered before facing Goliath, we too must gather the tools – the scriptures, the prayers, the testimonies – that will sustain us in the battles ahead.
Barbara's emphasis on recognizing our primary identities as children of God, children of the covenant, and disciples of Christ is a powerful antidote to the anxieties of our age. It’s a reminder that our worth isn’t defined by our accomplishments or our status, but by our relationship with Him.
Covenant Belonging: The Flywheel of Faith
The concept of covenant belonging isn’t just a feeling; it’s a foundation. It’s the bedrock upon which we build our lives, our families, and our communities. And it's inextricably linked to the Charity Flywheel. Your engagement here, your commitment to building, fuels the Missionary Fund and expands our reach – bringing the gospel to places like Ghana, where the seeds of faith are taking root. This isn’t just about personal growth; it's about a collective rising. It's about becoming digital striplings, armed with truth and ready to defend the gospel.
Outback Jack reminds us, “The Lord’s work is not a solo endeavor. It requires a collective effort, a gathering of hearts and hands.” He’d say, “Look at Ammon—he didn’t conquer the Lamanites alone! He had companions, he had support, and he had unwavering faith.” This is the spirit of the gathering – a spirit of unity, of purpose, and of unwavering commitment.
Let us, like Abinadi, be willing to stand for truth, even when it’s unpopular. Let us, like Crockygo and his painted rocks, find creative ways to share the message of hope and redemption. Let us claim our church, our place in this grand work, and contribute our unique talents and abilities to the building of Zion. The map of churches is waiting for you; show us where you are and how you're contributing.
The work is before us. Will you answer the call?
