According to Our Language: The Call to Understand and Gather

Beloved Builders, gather close. Let us pause this week and consider the weight of divine communication. When we think of the prophets, we often picture great, booming pronouncements—words of law, covenants, and divine decree. But sometimes, the most profound revelations are the simplest, the most plain, and the most intimately addressed.

In his closing testament, Nephi taught us this beautiful, fundamental truth: that the Lord speaks not in a language foreign to our hearts, but according to our own understanding, and even according to our language. He promised, “I will speak unto you plainly, according to the plainness of my prophesying” (2 Nephi 31:2). This is a promise of clarity, a promise of divine grace meeting human capacity.

Think of the Covenant Path. From the miraculous climbing of Samuel the Lamanite’s walls to the steadfastness of Ammon at the Waters of Sebus, the Lord always meets His people where they are. We must be the Builders, not the Destroyers, discerning the truth from the noise, the sacred from the profane.

If God speaks to us in our understanding, how do we ensure that understanding is broad enough to encompass the whole of the gospel? It requires intentional effort—it requires gathering. The great task of the Kingdom is not merely to receive the truth, but to build structures of understanding that others can rely upon. We are called to be the hands that cut the stone and the feet that walk the path.
