Beyond Resolutions: Understanding True Spiritual Transformation
Feeling stuck in your discipleship journey? Remember that real change isn't just about better habits; it's about the Spirit changing who you are on the inside.
Brothers and sisters, if you’re anything like me when I first started serving, you’ve probably stood in a spot—a place where you *know* you need to change. You’ve made the plans, you’ve bought the planner, you’ve set the resolutions. You’ve done the outward work, but deep down, you feel that familiar, frustrating tug of knowing you aren't quite there yet.
It’s exhausting, isn't it? You try, you set the goals, you make the vows, and yet, the gap between where you are and where you want to be feels wider than ever. I’ve seen it, and I know that feeling of wanting to look at someone—a companion, a friend, even just staring at the ceiling—and whispering, “I’m sick of being stuck.”
If you’ve ever felt that weight—that combination of frustration, exhaustion, and maybe even a little shame over your own efforts—please know you are absolutely not alone. The Apostle Paul understood this struggle better than anyone. When he wrestled with the Spirit in Romans 7, he articulated that very human conflict: wanting to do right, but falling short. He felt the tension, the gap between his will and his action.
What Paul’s struggle teaches us, and what the Spirit continues to teach us today, is that trying to fix ourselves through sheer willpower, or even through perfect adherence to a plan, is often working with the wrong strategy. We are trying to *behavior modify* ourselves, when what we truly need is something deeper.
I was so blessed to see this message recently, and it really resonated with the core message of discipleship: Real change is not behavior modification; real change is spiritual transformation.
This is the message we need to carry into our lives as disciples, whether we are in the MTC, serving in the field, or right here in our homes as internet missionaries. It’s not just about what we *do* on the outside—the scripture study attendance, the number of talks given, the perfect adherence to the plan. It’s about allowing the Spirit to change who we *are* on the inside. It’s a profound shift in the heart.
This concept is so vital that it’s something I’m excited to dig into further. I encourage you to check out the resources coming soon on this topic, because understanding this distinction is key to building lasting habits that come from the gospel, not just from sheer grit.
This brings us back to the power of the gospel. When Paul cried out, “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” the answer wasn't found in his own effort. The answer, always, is found in the Atonement of Jesus Christ. That is the power that transforms the core of who we are, allowing us to become more like Him—to be Christlike.
If you’re feeling the pull of wanting to change, if you’re ready to move beyond just good intentions and into real transformation, I invite you to take the next step in your journey with Christ. The resources at life.church/next can guide you on what that next step looks like in your walk with the Savior.
For those of us who are already committed to the work, let’s keep building that foundation together. If you’re looking for a place to deepen your study, I highly recommend checking out the Book Clubs or Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces. Sometimes, wrestling through scripture together is the best way to move from just knowing *about* the gospel to actually *being* changed by it.
