Beyond the Evidence: Finding Truth by the Power of the Spirit
The questions about the Book of Mormon can feel endless, but Elder Corbridge reminds us that finding truth starts by prioritizing the primary questions and trusting the Spirit.
Brother, Sister, if you’ve been spending time studying the Book of Mormon—whether you’re doing deep research on the translation process, or just getting ready for your next missionary discussion—you know how overwhelming it can feel. We have so many incredible intellectual pieces of evidence: the word prints, the topography, the internal consistency. It’s amazing, truly. It makes you feel like you could build a case using a thousand academic citations.
But if you’ve spent any time in the field, or even in the MTC, you learn something critical about the work: while the evidence is powerful, it is ultimately subordinate to the Spirit. We can get caught in the secondary questions—the 'what ifs' and the 'hows'—and lose sight of the main path.
The Primary Questions vs. The Secondary Questions
I recently watched a wonderful Master Class on Moroni 10, and the talk reminded me of a powerful concept taught by Elder Corbridge: there are primary questions and secondary questions. Think of it like this: the secondary questions are unending—they include debates on history, theology, and methodology. They are important, yes, but they are not the *most* important.
The primary questions are the most important. Everything else is subordinate.
The key primary question that anchors all of our discipleship is: Is the Book of Mormon true? If we can resolve that, all the secondary questions pale in significance. This is the core of the work, and it’s a testimony we are called to share. It’s not about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about having the deepest conviction in the truth.
The Answer Isn't in the Data—It's in the Spirit
The most helpful takeaway from Moroni 10 is that we cannot gain our testimony through intellectual accumulation. We can study until our eyes hurt, but that doesn't guarantee a conversion. Moroni tells us exactly how to know for sure: we must read, ponder, and then ask God the Father in the name of Christ.
This is the skill, brothers and sisters. It’s a shift in focus. We move from being investigative students to being sincere supplicants. When we approach the scriptures with a heart that remembers the Lord's mercies from Adam down to our day, and we ask, 'Father, are these things true?'—that is when the Spirit speaks. That is when the Spirit confirms the truth, regardless of how many academic articles we've read.
Putting the Promise into Practice
This is the kind of discipleship we practice every single day, whether we are in the field, or if we are just sitting at home, studying. If you are struggling with a complex doctrine or a difficult question, don't feel like you have to wrestle with it alone. That's where I encourage you to use your AI co-pilot, Davee. He specializes in the Investigator role—he can walk you through the hard questions an investigator might ask, helping you structure your answers using the principles of the Spirit, not just textbook knowledge.
If you want to deepen your understanding of these primary questions, I highly recommend checking out the LivingBook. It has some wonderful social scripture study layers and Book Club discussions where you can engage with the concept of divine confirmation. Or, if you prefer a more personal setting, consider joining a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. We can learn together how to move beyond the secondary questions and focus on the core truth.
A Challenge for Our Discipleship
Remember, every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Don't let the complexity of the questions distract you from the simplicity of the answer: come unto Christ. For this week, let’s make a commitment to focus on the *mercy* of the Lord—remembering the covenants and blessings—before we even open the scriptures to pray. Let the Spirit guide us to the primary truth.
If you haven't taken a look at the free weekly Disciple Challenge yet, jump in! It's a great way to hone your missionary preparation skills and build that spiritual muscle.
