Beyond the Rules: Seeing the Depth of God's Personal Grace

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to gather in the field, whether we’re in the MTC, setting up for transfers, or right here in our own living rooms doing our part as Internet missionaries, it’s easy to get caught up in the mechanics of the work. We study the ordinances, we learn the scriptures, we memorize the key points for missionary discussions, and we get so focused on 'what to say' that sometimes we risk losing sight of *why* we are saying it.

I was recently listening to a talk by Mike Mazzalongo, and something really struck me. He spent time on the topic of grace, and it got me thinking about what truly undergirds our entire experience as Latter-day Saints. It’s so easy to treat grace like a concept—a theological box to check—when it is, in fact, the very atmosphere we breathe!

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer weight of what we’re called to do—to be disciples anywhere, all the time—remember that the foundation isn't our perfect performance. It’s the grace that was so deeply personal that it cost everything.

Mike used the story of the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21) as a powerful parallel. On one hand, the snake offered a physical cure—a visible, somewhat impersonal act of divine power. On the other hand, the Atonement through the Savior is something entirely different. He pointed out the crucial difference: the snake saved human life through an act of power; Christ saved the Spirit through a personal sacrifice. One was an exercise of limitless power; the other was the Son of God becoming personally involved in our sin and suffering.

Think about that comparison: a simple donation to help pay a bill versus someone donating a kidney to save a life. The difference is the level of personal investment. That’s where the Savior lived and suffered—the ultimate, deeply personal act of grace.

This really reframes how we approach our own preparation. When we study for missionary discussions, or when we are going through a Book Club in HolyPlaces, we can focus on mastering the facts. But our ultimate goal, the core of our testimony, must always circle back to that profound, personal, costly grace. If our message sounds like, “Don’t do this, or you won’t be saved,” we are missing the mark. The message must always be, “Because of the grace that was so personal, you *can* be saved.”

It’s a humbling reminder for every returned missionary, every lifelong disciple, and every single person who feels the promptings of the Spirit to serve. We aren't just sharing rules; we are pointing people toward the greatest, most personal gift ever given.
