What is Dynamic Range (And Why Does It Matter)?

Simply put, Dynamic Range (DR) is the measurable range between the brightest part of a scene (the highlights) and the darkest part (the shadows) that your camera or phone can capture in a single frame without losing detail. It is measured in stops.

If your camera has a high dynamic range, it means its sensor is capable of holding detail in both the deepest blacks and the brightest whites simultaneously. When you see a shot with perfectly rendered detail in a sunset sky and equally detailed shadows on the ground, that’s the sensor doing its job. But when you are working in challenging, real-world lighting—think of high-contrast street scenes or golden-hour backlighting—you need every stop you can get.

RAW and Log: The Secret Weapon

The key to harnessing maximum DR is shooting in file formats designed to capture the sensor's maximum data—namely, RAW photos or Log video profiles. These formats record a wider, flatter curve of light information, giving the post-production professional (or you, the craftsperson) the maximum room to play with.

When you shoot in a compressed JPEG or standard video format, the camera makes immediate decisions about how to render the image, often sacrificing highlight and shadow detail to keep the file size manageable. RAW and Log profiles keep all that data intact, allowing you to recover details during color grading and post-production using tools like DaVinci Resolve or Capture One.

This flexibility is why understanding the 'flat' look of high-DR images is important. While they might look less contrasty straight out of camera, that flatness is actually a gift—it’s the negative space that color grading artists need to build a rich, cinematic look.

While technical specs are fascinating, remember that dynamic range is only one variable. The best lens crafters understand that the perfect shot isn't just about the gear; it's about the technique, the light, and the timing.

  • Prioritize Exposure: When faced with extreme contrast, decide what is most important: the details in the shadows, or the details in the highlights? Metering your camera to favor one area can help prevent total blowout or crushing.
  • Embrace the Post: Always assume you will be grading. Shooting in RAW/Log is the investment you make in your own post-production workflow.

Mastering dynamic range means moving beyond simply taking a picture, and starting to think like a light architect. It’s about respecting the physics of light so that your final image has the depth and reality of what your eye truly saw.
