Beyond the 'Steak Center': Finding the Real Core of Our Faith

Sometimes the outside noise makes us question the center. Let's talk about what it means to live as disciples when the world tries to define us by what we aren't.

Man, sometimes it feels like we’re living in a cultural minefield, doesn't it? You’re out in the field, maybe doing a missionary discussion, or maybe you’re just trying to explain the Plan of Salvation to a friend who has only heard the soundbites. And you hear things—or maybe you see things—that make you pause. You start wondering, 'Is this *it*? Is this all there is?'

I was wrestling with that feeling recently. It felt like the narrative around us was trying to paint us as something… manageable. Something contained. Like a perfectly curated exhibit in a museum, or maybe, if I’m being blunt, like a 'steak center'—something you go to, you consume, and then you leave.

It’s a heavy thought, isn't it? Because what we are, as Latter-day Saints, isn't a commodity, and it certainly isn't a performance art piece for public consumption. We are disciples. We are called to be *disciples* everywhere, all the time.

I stumbled across this video, and honestly, it hit a nerve. It speaks to that tension—the gap between the public perception and the sacred, messy, beautiful reality of what it means to follow Christ. If you’ve ever felt like you were surviving the *idea* of the faith rather than living the *reality* of the covenant, this might resonate with you.

As I watched it, I kept thinking about the core of what we’re doing here, especially for those of us who are newly returned missionaries, or even those of us who are seasoned disciples who feel the pressure of the culture around us. The focus can get so external—the perfect talk, the perfect testimony, the perfect presentation of the Gospel. But the Lord calls us to something deeper: to *be* Christlike in the mundane moments.

The Strength of the Inner Circle

The true strength of the gospel isn't found in how well we can defend our doctrines in a public forum, though that takes preparation! It’s found in the quiet moments of discipleship. It’s in the Book Club where we wrestle with the Book of Mormon until the verses feel like they’re written directly on our hearts. It’s in the quiet commitment we make to study the scriptures, not just to pass a test, but because the Spirit whispers, 'This is truth.'

Remember that feeling in the MTC, or even in your first few weeks in the field, when everything was brand new? You were learning the mechanics—the best way to open a conversation, how to explain baptism. Those skills are vital, and we must always hone them. But the *heart*—the genuine, burning desire to follow Him—that’s what the video really brought home for me. That heart doesn't need an audience to be real.

A Skill for the Internet Missionary

If you are feeling the weight of defining the gospel in a world that loves to simplify, here’s a little mission-prep thought for you today. When you feel the urge to over-explain or defend, pause. Instead, ask the investigator a genuine, open-ended question about *their* life, and then listen for the thread of eternal truth in their answer. Let the Spirit guide the revelation, rather than trying to manufacture the perfect theological rebuttal. That’s where the real teaching happens.

“And if you keep the commandments of God, you shall have the Spirit of the gift, and the Spirit of knowledge, and the Spirit of power.” — Doctrine and Covenants 88:12

We are called to be Internet missionaries, yes, but more importantly, we are called to be disciples *anywhere*. Whether you’re in a formal setting, or just navigating the grocery store aisle with a friend, remember that you are representing the Savior. Let's keep our focus on the core—the Atonement, the Plan, the covenants—and let the outward noise just become background music to the beautiful, steady rhythm of discipleship.

If this resonated with you, I encourage you to dive deeper. Have you been thinking about what it means to be truly Christlike lately?
