Billboard Signs for the Spirit: Seeing the Bigger Picture in Scripture

Sometimes, when we’re studying scripture, it feels like we’re following a winding path, and we can’t quite see the destination. We read a passage, we get a solid nugget of truth, and then we move on, only to realize later that the whole section was building toward one massive, glorious point. It reminds me of driving down the highway and seeing a sign for a big attraction coming up—a billboard pointing the way.

That’s exactly what the author of Hebrews does, and it’s a powerful lesson for us all as we strive to be better disciples and better messengers. We are constantly being shown billboards pointing us toward the ultimate reality: Jesus Christ.

The core argument of Hebrews, as the author wrote to Jewish Christians facing persecution, is crystal clear: Jesus Christ is superior to everything that came before, including the prophets and, most strikingly, the angels. This wasn't just theological trivia; it was vital for their belief system. They needed to understand that following Christ wasn't just another sect; it was a step into something infinitely greater.

When we look at this in the context of our own mission preparation, or even just our weekly study in a Book Club, we should be looking for these billboards. What is the overarching theme that ties together disparate verses? What is the one truth that the Spirit is trying to impress upon our hearts?

The author even warned his readers: "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it." This is a timeless warning for every member of the Church, every prospective missionary, and every disciple learning to be an internet missionary. We must pay attention to the core message!

When you grasp the weight of Christ’s sacrifice, you won't drift, no matter how many objections are thrown your way.
