Building on the Rock: Laying Our Foundations for the Storms to Come

Brothers and sisters, have you ever watched a master builder at work? You see the grand structure rising—the beautiful facade, the perfect finish, the sheer scale of the achievement. It looks complete, right? But if you look closely, you know that the real magic, the thing that determines if the whole thing stands when the winds pick up, isn't what you see on the outside.

It’s the foundation. The deep, unseen groundwork. And that, my friends, is exactly where the Savior wants us to focus our energy as we continue in the work.

Recently, I was reflecting on a talk that used the powerful imagery of building houses—one on the rock, one on the sand. It hit me like a spiritual jolt. We spend so much time perfecting our *outward* lives—our callings, our ward activities, our testimonies—but what about the unseen work happening deep within our hearts? What is the foundation we are truly laying?

The principle is crystal clear: a life built upon the Savior’s words, and those words lived out, can weather any storm. Think about the trials we’ve faced—the global shifts, the personal tempests. In the eye of those storms, the peace I felt wasn't circumstantial; it was rooted in something solid. It was rooted in the Rock.

What Exactly Is This Foundation?

The Savior Himself laid it out for us in Matthew 7:24. It’s not just about *hearing* the words of the gospel; it’s about *doing* them. It’s the active process of discipleship. It requires two things, and these are things we can strengthen today:

1. Consistent Spiritual Nourishment: We must dedicate time—sacred, protected time—to feeding our spirits on the word of God. This means more than just reading; it means *meditating*. Choosing one verse, one principle, and letting it sink into the marrow of your bones throughout the day.
2. Obedience in Action: This is the hard part, isn't it? Obedience often doesn't feel easy. It might cost us comfort, or it might cost us convenience. But the Spirit whispers that doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult, is always the right thing. That’s where the true strength is forged.

This isn't just for times of crisis; this is for *every* day. This is how we prepare for the inevitable challenges of life and the challenges that await us as we gather Israel.

As we continue to be Internet missionaries, to build Zion from our homes, we need foundations that can withstand the digital storms as well as the literal ones. I want to challenge every disciple here to identify one area this week where you are *hearing* the word but not yet *doing* it. Where is the gap between knowledge and action?
