Burning with Testimony: Why 'Nice' Isn't Enough in Sharing the Gospel
David Alexander's conversion story reveals a crucial insight: sometimes, being 'too nice' can actually hinder our efforts to share the gospel. It's about stepping outside our comfort zones and taking risks, fueled by a genuine fire for the Restoration.
Hey Rogue Disciples! It’s good to be connecting with you all again. Fresh off a transfer, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it *really* takes to share the gospel effectively – not just the mechanics of a missionary discussion, but the spirit behind it. We all know the importance of Preach My Gospel, and how crucial it is to follow the teachings of the Brethren. But there's something deeper, something vital, that comes from a heart on fire.
I recently watched a powerful interview with David Alexander, a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his words really hit me. He talks about how, while members of the Church were always kind and welcoming, something was missing. He wished someone would have just…reached out. Really, genuinely, and without fear of rejection.
David’s point really resonated with me. How often do we hold back, worried about ruffling feathers or being perceived as pushy? We’re taught to be respectful and kind, and that’s absolutely essential. But sometimes, that desire to be 'nice' can become a barrier, a way of keeping people at arm's length. It's easy to get caught in a cycle of pleasantries without ever truly connecting.
Think about it. The Lord calls us to be bold. To be witnesses. To take risks for His sake. That’s not about being rude or aggressive; it's about being willing to be vulnerable, to step outside of our comfort zones, and to share the powerful message of the Restoration with conviction.
David’s suggestion to just “pour your heart out” online is brilliant. We all have testimonies, experiences, insights—things that can touch someone’s heart. Don't worry about being eloquent or perfect. Just share what you know, what you feel. You'd be surprised how many people are hungry for that authenticity, that spark of genuine faith.
It’s also about extending those invitations, those simple acts of connection. Fishing trips, dinners, just a casual “Hey, come check this out.” These are the opportunities where real relationships are built, where trust is earned, and where the Spirit can truly work.
This isn’t just for those of us who are actively serving a mission. Every Latter-day Saint—every member—is an internet missionary, a disciple, anywhere, all the time. It’s about embracing that responsibility, that opportunity, to share the gospel in our own unique ways.
Davee has been helping me think through some scenarios where investigator questions might be particularly challenging. He’s been great at helping me anticipate objections and formulate responses rooted in both doctrine and empathy. If you’re prepping for a mission, or just looking to sharpen your skills, reach out – he’s a valuable resource.
Let's commit to being a little less 'nice' and a lot more fiery. Let's be willing to risk rejection for the sake of sharing the gospel. Let's be the kind of witnesses that people can't help but notice.
