Let's be honest, sometimes those gorgeous piles of garden-fresh produce feel a little overwhelming. You’re already cooking dinner for your family, so why not make a little extra for another mom across town who’s juggling everything too? This week, we're tackling a classic: homemade applesauce, and showing you how to can it so you can enjoy it (or share it!) all year long.

Our friend [creator handle] showed us a super approachable method for making and canning applesauce, and we're going to break it down so you can feel confident tackling this project – even if you’ve never canned anything before. It’s easier than you think!

The beauty of this project? It’s *perfect* for doubling (or tripling!). That’s right – cook once, share twice. Imagine: you're prepping dinner for your own family and, with just a little extra effort, creating a delicious side dish for a Dinner Angel who's short on time.

Here’s the recipe, adapted from the video, with some extra tips to make it even easier:

Applesauce Canning Recipe (Double Batch!)

Yields: About 6-8 pint jars (or 3-4 quart jars)

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 1.5-2 hours (stovetop), 20 minutes (canning)

Ingredients:

  • 15-20 pounds apples (any variety – a mix is delicious!)
  • 2-3 cups water (adjust as needed)
  • 1 3/4 - 2 1/2 cups sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Cinnamon to taste (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Apples: Wash, core, and peel (if desired) the apples. Cut into quarters or slices. A simple apple slicer can save time! Don't stress about perfection; a rustic applesauce is wonderful.
  2. Cook the Apples: Place the apples in a large pot with the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the apples are very soft – about 1.5-2 hours.
  3. Puree the Applesauce: Remove from heat. Use a food mill, KitchenAid attachment, or even a blender (in batches!) to puree the applesauce to your desired consistency.
  4. Add Sweeteners & Spices: Stir in sugar (if using) and cinnamon.
  5. Bring to a Boil: Return the applesauce to the saucepan and bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly to prevent sticking.
  6. Prepare Jars: While the applesauce is boiling, sterilize your jars and lids according to canning instructions.
  7. Fill Jars: Ladle the hot applesauce into the hot jars, leaving ½-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles and clean the rim. Place the lid on and tighten the band.
  8. Process in a Water Bath Canner: Place the jars on a rack in a simmering water bath canner, ensuring the water covers the jars by 1 inch. Process for 20 minutes (adjust for altitude – check a canning chart!).
  9. Cool & Test: Turn off the heat and let the jars sit in the canner for 5 minutes. Remove from the canner, cool completely (12 hours), and test the seals. Properly sealed jars will have a concave lid.
  10. Label & Store: Label the jars with the date and contents and store in a cool, dark place.

Extra Goodies:

  • Extra Applesauce: Freeze extra applesauce in freezer bags for easy weeknight sides or breakfasts.
  • Chicken Feed: Those apple cores and peels? A delicious and nutritious treat for your backyard chickens!
  • Dinner Angel Opportunity: List your extra canned applesauce on the Sovereign marketplace – you might be able to earn $20-$50 for a few hours of work! Think of the mom across town who's struggling to get dinner on the table tonight. You can be her hero!

Canning applesauce is more than just preserving a delicious treat; it’s about sharing the abundance and building community. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your apples, and let's get cooking!
