Chosen, Not Of The World: Finding Strength in the Odds

Sometimes the greatest testimony we need is a reminder that being disciples of Christ means choosing a path misunderstood by the world.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt that strange, almost paradoxical weight of belonging? Like you’re standing on a hill overlooking a valley, and everyone down in the valley seems to be living by a different set of rules? It can feel isolating, can’t it?

When I was first out in the field, especially when we were doing missionary discussions with investigators who were deeply immersed in the culture around them, I remember feeling that tension. You’re trying to share the gospel—the pure, perfect message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ—and the world just… doesn't get it. They see the difference, and sometimes, they react with confusion, or worse, resistance.

It’s easy, when you’re new to the covenant path, to think that if you just *explain* the doctrine enough, the world will eventually understand. But sometimes, the message itself requires a profound shift in perspective—a realization that the world's standards and God's standards are fundamentally opposed.

The Privilege of Being Chosen

I was recently watching some material focusing on the life of Jesus, and a passage really struck me that echoed something I’ve felt in my own journey back to full-time discipleship. The core idea is this: If the world loves what it is, and we are called to be *different*—to be His disciples—then that difference *will* draw opposition.

It’s a powerful reminder, isn't it? That the very fact that we have been chosen—that we are called to follow the Savior—is the greatest testimony we can carry. We are not meant to blend in until we are indistinguishable from the world around us. We are meant to shine!

This isn't a call to fear, though. It's a call to *rejoice* in our covenant status. It’s a call to remember that the Master's loyalty to His disciples outweighs any earthly loyalty. Think about it: The Master’s power is eternal; the world’s approval is fleeting.

This week, as you’re doing your personal study, I want to encourage you to focus on that contrast. Where in your life—in your friendships, your job, your social circles—are you being called to choose the path of Christ, even when it’s unpopular?

Remember, every single one of us is an internet missionary. Whether you're studying in a Book Club in HolyPlaces, preparing for your next missionary discussions, or just having a quiet moment of prayer, you are doing the work. You are bearing witness to the covenants we have made.

If you need help wrestling with the "why" behind some difficult questions you might encounter—whether it’s from an investigator or even from yourself late at night—I highly recommend running it by Davee. He’s excellent at walking through those hard questions using his AI Investigator role. It’s a wonderful tool for missionary preparation!

To keep the momentum going, I’d love for you to check out the latest reflections on the Iron Rod. If you haven't already, take a look at the latest devotional material available in LivingBook. It helps keep our focus sharp on becoming more Christlike.

If you feel the Spirit nudging you toward deeper scripture study, remember that the Bible Study Groups and Social Scripture Study layer are waiting for you in LivingBook. Let’s keep building up our knowledge base together!

For those who are newly returned, or even those who are just starting their journey, please know that the Brethren are here to support you. Don't hesitate to reach out to your local District Leader or a trusted returned missionary friend. We lift each other up in this great work!

What’s one way you can live this week that makes you feel distinctly, beautifully, and joyfully *not* of the world? Share it below!
