Climbing to Sinai: Finding Our Steps on the Covenant Path

Just like Israel ascending Sinai, our discipleship requires steady steps, delegation, and remembering that the view from the top is worth the climb.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever stood at the base of a truly monumental challenge? The kind of challenge that looks daunting from the bottom—a sheer ascent, a long, winding path through the wilderness—and you can’t see the summit, only the next foothold?

That feeling, that sense of arduous but necessary upward movement, is what the study of Exodus brings to mind. We’re looking at Israel’s journey to Mount Sinai, a journey that wasn't just a hike; it was a divine curriculum in leadership, law, and covenant keeping. It reminds me so much of our own journey as Latter-day Saints.

It’s easy, when we’re deep in the process—whether it’s preparing for missions, navigating a difficult personal trial, or just trying to keep up with the pace of the gospel—to feel like we’re plodding along in the darkness. We keep walking, we keep following the rhythm, but the ultimate purpose feels distant.

But the beautiful thing, the thing the Spirit whispers to us when we feel overwhelmed, is that the principles of the gospel are built step-by-step. We don't get the whole covenant revealed in one blinding flash. We get it in manageable, divinely appointed steps.

Learning to Lead: Doing For vs. Doing To

What struck me most in this week's study was the theme of delegation. Moses, the incredible prophet, couldn't do it all himself. He had Aaron, he had Joshua, and he had the whole community needing direction. The Lord’s plan, and indeed the plan for us, is never for one person to carry the entire weight. We are called to be a body, where every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.

This isn't just for the priesthood keys; it’s for the mundane moments of our lives. It’s about trusting the gifts around you, whether that’s a companion who excels at organizing, or a friend who has a unique gift for listening. When we try to "do it all" ourselves, we burn out, and we lose sight of the magnificent view waiting at the top.

This principle echoes so strongly in our efforts to be internet missionaries. You don't have to write every single social media post, or schedule every single study session. You can support the effort by being a consistent, faithful participant in the Book Club, by sharing a thoughtful insight in the Social Scripture Study feed, or by simply being ready to listen when a friend needs to talk. That is service, and it is gospel-given.

The Steadfast Path Forward

The transcript notes that the path to the top required consistent effort. It wasn't just about the destination; it was about the *process* of ascending. Think of the commandments—they aren't a burden, but rather the very rungs of Jacob's ladder, guiding us back to the Savior. They are the structure that keeps us safe on the steep drop-offs of the world.

If you’re feeling the pressure of the law, or the weight of expectation, remember the pattern: progress is made by taking the next right step, trusting that the Lord has provided the support—be it the Spirit, a dedicated leader, or even a helpful AI Investigator like Davee to walk you through those tough questions.

I encourage you all this week to identify one area in your life—your calling, your study habits, or your personal testimony—where you feel you are trying to carry the load alone. How can you intentionally delegate, or more accurately, *share* the load? Who can you ask for help, or who can you confidently teach? That act of reaching out is an act of faith, and the Spirit will meet you there.

A Little Preparation for Our Own Journey

As we continue to study these foundational principles, I wanted to point you toward some excellent material. If you haven't already, I highly recommend diving into the Iron Rod writings on the nature of covenants. They really help frame the idea that our covenants are not rules, but rather pathways back to the Savior.

If you're looking for a place to deepen your study with others, don't forget about the resources in HolyPlaces. Whether it's joining a Book Club or just participating in the Social Scripture Study layer, connecting with other disciples is how we keep the momentum going.

For those of you who are feeling the weight of missionary preparation right now, remember that every single conversation, every single question asked, is a chance to refine your answers. If you want to practice walking through those tough investigator questions, I invite you to use Davee in LivingBook. He’s ready to walk you through the hard questions!

If you enjoyed this reflection, please consider joining our next gathering. We'll be discussing how these principles apply to our modern-day efforts to gather Israel. Keep those hiking boots laced up, disciples!
