Digging for Gold: Finding the Treasures in the Process of the Gospel

Sometimes the most profound spiritual discoveries are found when we're digging in the dirt, whether it's on a pond or in our own testimonies.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt like you were digging in the dirt, and instead of finding gold, you unearthed something much more valuable? Maybe it was a memory, a truth, or a question that needed answering. It reminds me of listening to some of the recent conversations—the way they talked about fishing, about history, about the sheer *process* of things.

It sounds wild, but when I was reflecting on the conversation about treasure hunting, I kept thinking about what we do in our own discipleship. We aren't always looking for the flashy, immediate "gold" of a perfect conversion story or a flawless testimony. Sometimes, the real work—the sacred work—is in the digging itself.

The speakers were talking about how the bloodline gets watered down, how the modern experience can feel diluted compared to what came before. It’s a natural human tendency to look back and feel a sense of loss, a yearning for something more solid, more foundational. And in our mission preparation, or even when we are just studying in a Book Club, we run into that same feeling. We look at the scriptures, and we see the depth of the covenant path, and we think, "How do I connect with that? How do I make that real for someone who has never heard it?"

The Art of the Dig: Finding the Spiritual Artifacts

The conversation touched on how the physical act of digging—whether for metal or for understanding—requires patience. You can't just scoop up the answer. You have to sift through the static, the random bits of junk, the things that *look* like they might be something, but aren't. That’s discipleship, friends. It’s sifting.

When we are in missionary discussions, or even just preparing for those crucial moments of sharing the Gospel, we are metal detecting spiritual artifacts. We are looking for the genuine, the pure, the undeniable truth of the restored gospel. We have to be willing to dig past the superficial attractions—the quick answers, the easy cultural nods—to find what is deep under the surface.

Remember that feeling when you are studying a difficult passage, maybe one of the Isaiah studies we love, or even tackling a tough question in a Bible Study Group? You might read it five times, and it just won't click. You feel like you're hitting static. That’s okay. That’s the process. That’s the Lord teaching you to be more patient, more diligent, and more willing to keep digging until the pattern reveals itself.

The Spirit doesn't rush the revelation. He guides your hand to the right spot, but you still have to dig.

This week, I want us to focus on the *process* of becoming more Christlike. It’s not a destination you arrive at; it’s the daily act of digging out the impurities of the self and uncovering the Savior's likeness. It requires the same persistence as Jase finding something interesting on that old plantation—you have to keep looking, even when it’s just shovels and cans.

As we continue this work, remember that every single member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Whether you’re fishing, remodeling a historical venue, or just sitting down with a friend over coffee, you have the opportunity to dig for truth.

A Quick Mission Prep Thought

If you are preparing for the field, or even just trying to deepen your own understanding, try this: When you are studying a scripture passage, don't just read what it says. Ask yourself, "What is the *cultural artifact* here? What assumption is the original audience making that we, living in our modern context, might be missing?" This forces you to dig deeper than the surface meaning.

If you want to practice this with a friend or family member, I highly recommend diving into a Book Club session in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful place to practice that mutual digging!

For those who enjoy wrestling with the deeper implications of the plan of salvation, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on covenants. If you need a sparring partner to walk through those hard questions, I’m always here, or you can bring your toughest questions to Davee for an AI Investigator session. He’s ready to help you prepare for those tough missionary discussions!
