Divine Patterns: Following the Iron Rod in Times of Spiritual Resistance

There are times when the Spirit whispers guidance so clearly, and yet, the hands of those we are called to lead seem determined to grasp at the wrong chord. We study the covenants, we preach the doctrines, we prepare the hearts of the saints, only to encounter resistance—not merely disagreement, but a deep-seated resistance that makes progress feel impossibly slow. It can feel as if we are trying to change not just a mind, but a pattern of thought itself.

As disciples, we are called to be scholars of the restored gospel, but we are also called to be shepherds. And sometimes, the most sophisticated leadership models—even those from the world of behavioral science—fall short of the divine mandate. We are not meant to operate by mere secular models; our guide is revelation, and our pattern is found in the covenant path.

Seeking Divine Patterns: From Secular Models to Sacred Scripture

Recently, we reviewed a discussion on identifying 'patterns' in leadership. The concepts discussed—such as confirmation bias and the need to start with clear desired results—are powerful tools for any organization. They help us understand *how* people think. But as committed Latter-day Saints, we recognize that these patterns are merely the echo of a far greater pattern: the divine pattern of the Restoration itself.

The true patterns are not just behavioral; they are doctrinal. They are the immutable truths found within the scriptures that guide us back to the Lord. When we speak of the Iron Rod, we are speaking of a pattern: a sacred, continuous line of divine guidance from the Father through the Prophet. This pattern is far more reliable than any organizational chart or psychological assessment.

“And if ye shall keep my commandments and endure to punish, I will send my Spirit and continue to receive my Spirit unto you.” (D&C 121:5)

The Problem of the Will: When Patterns Fail

The greatest challenge to any steward is when the individual's will—their deeply ingrained habits, biases, and doubts—clash with the directive of the Spirit. The transcript highlighted the difficulty in changing thinking, noting that confirmation bias is a built-in human tendency to reinforce what we already believe. This is a deeply human struggle, brethren, and it is a struggle that requires more than merely presenting more evidence.

As scholars and leaders, we must remember that we are stewards, not engineers. We cannot force the change of heart; only the Atonement can do that. When we encounter a brother or sister who is questioning their faith, or who is stuck in a pattern of sin, the response must be pastoral, doctrinally sound, and rooted in the covenants, never in accusation.

The question we must internalize, drawing from the deepest wells of scripture and revelation, is not *why* this is happening, but *what* should I do next? As Roger Connors counselled, the focus must shift from the etiology of the trial to the actionable steps of faith. We are commanded to hold on, continue faithful, and bind ourselves to Jesus Christ.

Patterns Are Not Formulas

This is the most critical distinction we must internalize: **Patterns are not formulas.**

A formula suggests that if we input A and B, we are guaranteed to get C. The Spirit does not operate that way. The Spirit operates through divine timing, through covenants, and through personal repentance. We must identify the *pattern*—the overarching principle of Christ's Atonement, the pattern of repentance, the pattern of temple covenants—and then trust that the Lord will deliver the blessing He sees is best for us, even if it doesn't match our logical expectations.

To find these divine patterns, we must submit our study to the Spirit. We must treat the scriptures not as a collection of historical texts, but as a living, breathing repository of covenants and eternal guidance. We must ask: What is the overarching pattern of redemption here? What principle, if followed, will bring the most glory and the most light?

The work of the Iron Rod is to keep us focused on that continuous, divine current of guidance. Our commitment is to study the scriptures daily, not merely for knowledge, but for the profound, pattern-revealing whisperings of the Spirit.

A Call to Deeper Study

If we are to be true scholars of the Restoration, we must look beyond the obvious doctrines and seek the underlying patterns of eternal law.
