Don't Hide Your Light: Being a Disciple in the Field, Wherever You Are

Whether you're in the MTC, on a mission, or at home, your life is your ministry. Let's talk about letting your light shine through daily choices and courage.

There are times when the weight of the gospel feels heavy. Maybe you're deep in mission prep, trying to craft the perfect talk, or maybe you've recently returned and are feeling the quiet hum of life settling back into routine. It's easy to feel like the biggest, most dramatic moments are the only ones that count.

But if you've been in the field, or if you've been studying the Plan of Salvation, you know better. The gospel isn't just about the big moments—it's about the quiet consistency of the Spirit guiding your choices, the daily work of being Christlike, and the gentle, steady glow of your testimony.

The Quiet Power of the Light

Recently, I watched a beautiful little bedtime story—one that hit me right in the heart. It spoke about not hiding your light. It’s a gentle, powerful reminder that our discipleship isn't something we perform only when we are standing in front of an investigator. It's something we live out in the mundane moments: when we choose patience in traffic, when we choose kindness to a difficult coworker, or when we choose to study our scriptures even when we are exhausted.

We are called to be disciples, and that means realizing that every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. That light—that witness of the Atonement—doesn't require a podium or a uniform; it requires heart.

Voice, Choices, and Courage: Your Three Pillars of Service

The story laid out a perfect framework for us. It’s not just about what we say (our voice); it’s about how we live (our choices) and the willingness to stand by what we believe (our courage). This is the work.

  • The Voice: This is your testimony. It’s the words you speak in missionary discussions, but it's also the quiet words you speak to your family about the Plan of Salvation. Don't let fear of judgment silence the Lord's promptings.
  • The Choices: These are the daily, visible acts of discipleship. Choosing to forgive, choosing to serve, choosing to be humble—these are powerful, quiet gospel lessons.
  • The Courage: This is the willingness to be different. It's having the courage to share your faith when it's uncomfortable, knowing that the Spirit will guide you, and that you are never walking alone.

Practical Mission Prep: Making Your Light Visible

If you are currently in the MTC or preparing for a transfer, this week’s challenge is to focus on the 'Choice.' Instead of just memorizing talks, I want you to identify three small, daily choices you can make this week that demonstrate the gospel—whether it’s reaching out to a friend who is struggling or being exceptionally patient with a family member.

If you're a lifelong disciple, take a moment to look around your own neighborhood. Who is an "investigator" in your life? It might be a neighbor, a coworker, or even just a friend who is questioning things. Your light is needed there.

Deepening Your Disciple Skills with the Brethren's Tools

Remember that you don't have to figure out the hard questions alone. If you're struggling to articulate the answer to a tough question—like, "What if I don't feel the Spirit?"—I highly recommend using Davee, our AI Investigator co-pilot. He's trained to walk you through exactly those hard questions and help you craft an answer rooted in scripture and testimony.

For deeper study, make sure you are leveraging the resources available. If you're ready to dive into the scriptures, consider joining a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. The social scripture study layer in LivingBook is a goldmine for seeing how others are applying the gospel in their own lives.

The greatest light we have is not our own; it is the light of Christ, which we are called to reflect. Never underestimate the power of a small, sincere testimony.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because even the smallest act of faith, or the quietest testimony, has immense power to light the path for someone else and strengthen your own faith.

Absolutely not. The Lord promises that we are never walking alone; He is with the faithful, always.

It means being bold in your goodness and brave in your belief—acting with courage and consistency in our choices, even when it's difficult.
