Finding Our Center: Stability in the Storm of Life's Emotions

Just like we seek stability in our feelings, we must anchor ourselves to the unchanging truths found through our covenants and the Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, if you’ve been in the field, or even just wrestling with your own thoughts during a quiet morning study, you know that life isn't a steady, predictable current. It’s more like a tide—sometimes a high swell of joy, sometimes a sudden, unexpected undertow of worry or frustration. We can get so caught up in the immediate emotional weather that we forget where our true anchor lies.

I was thinking the other day about how easily we can become masters of our *outer* circumstances. We feel like our mood dictates our worth, or that the economy, or the behavior of a friend, or even the traffic on the way to the meeting, has the final say on our peace. It’s exhausting, isn't it? Trying to will ourselves into a consistent state of "good enough."

It’s a lesson that resonates deeply with what I’ve seen in my own missionary journey—and what I’ve seen in the lives of returned missionaries navigating the realities of the world. We learn quickly that trying to control the uncontrollable is a recipe for burnout. We can't control the oil prices, or if a potential investigator will be receptive today, or even if we’ll have a perfect conversation during missionary discussions. But what *can* we control?

The message here, echoed through scriptures and preached by prophets, is that the source of true stability isn't found in mastering our feelings or our environment. It’s found in mastering our *relationship* with the Savior.

The Shield of the Highest

The speaker referenced Psalm 91:1—sitting under the shadow of the Most High. Think about what that means in the context of our discipleship. It’s not a passive suggestion; it’s an active choice to anchor ourselves to the divine. This requires consistent, intentional effort. It means making time for the sacred things—the things that feed the spirit and keep the heart steady.

Making Time for the Spirit

When I was first getting into the rhythm of full-time missionary work, I thought "spiritual nourishment" meant just showing up for the daily scripture study. But I learned that it’s more than that. It’s the whole package: the heartfelt testimony we share, the sincere gratitude we feel when we see the Savior’s hand at work, the willingness to repent when we stumble, and the quiet time to just *talk* to Him. We shouldn't treat prayer like a checklist item; it should be the natural outflow of a heart that knows its Father.

This concept of stability—of being unshaken by the day's turmoil—is what we are called to cultivate in our lives, whether we are in the MTC, serving in a stake, or simply connecting with someone online as an internet missionary. It’s about developing that inner fortitude, that peace that comes from knowing the covenant path.

A Little Prep Thought for the Field

If you are preparing for the field, or if you are currently serving, I want to pass along a small piece of advice: Don't let your emotional highs and lows dictate your *message*. Your message—the core truth of the gospel—must remain steady, regardless of how the conversation flows or how the investigator responds. Be prepared to pivot, but never abandon the anchor truth of the Atonement.

And for those of us who are lifelong disciples, remember that this isn't just for times of crisis. This is the daily maintenance of the soul. It's choosing to study, choosing to gather strength, and choosing to trust the process, even when the "weather" seems unpredictable.

If you feel the need to deepen this discussion, I highly recommend checking out the latest readings in the LivingBook. Sometimes, diving into the social scripture study layer, or joining a Book Club, can give us the shared perspective we need to keep our own spirits steady.

Let’s commit today to not letting our circumstances dictate our peace. Let’s find our center in Him. I’m looking forward to connecting with you all this week. If you’re feeling the pull to study more, consider joining one of our upcoming Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces!
