Finding Our Safety Zone: Living Within the Boundaries of Gospel Truth
Sometimes we build emotional boundaries out of fear. Learning to live within the boundaries of God's Word is how we find true, lasting freedom.
Brothers and sisters, have you ever found yourself walking on eggshells in a relationship? Maybe you find yourself constantly editing your thoughts, softening your convictions, or agreeing with things you know aren't quite right, all just to keep the peace, or worse—to avoid the sting of disappointment or rejection?
It’s a natural human instinct, isn't it? We build these emotional 'safety zones' around ourselves, walls we think will keep the hurt out. But what if those walls aren't actually protecting us? What if they're just keeping us trapped?
I was recently reflecting on a talk, and it really hit home how much we sometimes confuse 'setting boundaries' with 'retreating into fear.' The speaker talked about the concept of boundaries—the protective lines we need—but then pivoted to something much deeper: the boundaries set by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Gospel as Our True Safety Zone
It was striking to hear the analogy of the boundaries of God's Word. We naturally want to live in the "shade of the Almighty," feeling safe and protected. But the speaker pointed out that the promises of scripture—the shield we think is keeping us safe—are conditional. They depend on us actually *living* within those boundaries.
This isn't just about keeping our finances straight, though that's a real-world example of boundaries! It’s about our hearts, our covenants, and our daily choices. When we try to live outside the established boundaries of the gospel—when we act based on fear, resentment, or the need to control others—we inevitably drift into chaos. We find ourselves in a cycle of trying to manage other people's feelings rather than submitting to the Savior’s plan.
From Hearing to Doing: The Difference Between Knowing and Living
This was the part that really made me pause and think about my own discipleship. It’s so easy to attend a meeting, hear a powerful talk, maybe even clap and say, "Amen!" and then walk out the door and let the momentum die. We treat gospel principles like something we *hear* rather than something we *live*.
The message was crystal clear: Hearing the word isn't enough. We have to *do* the word. We have to actively choose to live within those boundaries. When we talk about forgiving our enemies, for instance, it’s not a passive feeling; it’s an active choice to release the bitterness that chains *us* to the past. That act of grace, that choice to forgive, is what brings the real freedom!
It reminded me of the incredible power of Christ's Atonement. It’s not just a doctrine we learn; it’s a power we must invite into our daily lives. It requires us to trade our self-made emotional boundaries for the perfect, perfect boundaries set by divine law.
Mission Prep Skill: Identifying the Fear-Based Boundary
If I could give you one bite-sized skill today, it’s this: When you feel the urge to manipulate a conversation, over-explain yourself, or withdraw because you anticipate criticism—pause. Ask yourself, "Am I reacting out of genuine love for the truth, or am I reacting out of fear of being disliked?" That pause is where the Spirit whispers, "Stay within the boundaries."
This principle applies everywhere: in your living room, on the internet, and when you’re preparing for those crucial missionary discussions. We are called to be disciples *anywhere*, and that means being brave enough to live the gospel even when it feels uncomfortable.
If you're looking to deepen this kind of principle-based study, I highly recommend diving into the Iron Rod authors' writings on covenants. They really nail this concept of covenant keeping as freedom. If you haven't checked out the LivingBook lately, take some time to explore the Social Scripture Study layer—it’s a wonderful way to see how others are wrestling with these eternal principles.
We are all on this journey together, fellow rogue disciples. Let's keep challenging each other to move from *knowing* the gospel to *living* the gospel. I’m looking forward to seeing what you all are wrestling with this week!
If you're feeling the pull to learn more about these covenants, consider joining a Book Club in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful place to discuss these deep truths with fellow disciples.
