Finding Our Strength in Quiet Confidence: Trusting God's Promises

Sometimes the world feels overwhelming, but Isaiah 30:15 reminds us that true strength comes not from our alliances, but from quiet confidence in the Lord.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt the weight of the world pressing down? Like you’re standing on shaky ground, surrounded by threats—whether those threats are visible empires, or the quiet, nagging doubts that creep into our hearts when we’re trying to keep the commandments?

It’s easy, isn't it, to look at the challenges stacked against us—the difficulties in the field, the tough questions in missionary discussions, even the struggles to keep our own covenants—and feel like we need an earthly alliance, a backup plan, something *besides* the Lord.

But the Spirit whispers a profound truth, one that echoes through the ages, reminding us where our true security lies. We’re talking about trusting God’s promises.

The Promise of Quiet Confidence

I was recently studying Isaiah 30:15, and it really hit me. The context was dire—the people of Judah were facing overwhelming threats. And what did they do? They looked outward, seeking protection from other powers, rather than looking inward, toward the covenant promises of their God. They chose to trust in alliances rather than in the Lord.

But the promise remains unshaken, hasn't it? In returning and rest you shall be saved in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

This isn't just ancient prophecy; it’s a roadmap for our lives as Latter-day Saints today. It’s a blueprint for what genuine trust looks like. It requires four things, and they build upon each other like the foundation of a temple.

If we take a moment to unpack what the Spirit taught us from that passage, we see that trusting God’s promise isn't passive; it’s an active return. It means:

  1. Returning: If we know we've strayed—if there's been disobedience, or we've been relying on our own strength—we must return to the Lord's ways. That’s the first step in any sincere effort to be more Christlike.
  2. Resting: When we truly trust Him, we stop striving so desperately to guard ourselves. We can rest in Him. He is the best Protector.
  3. Quietness: This is so vital, especially for us who are constantly communicating—whether it’s in a Book Club discussion or just navigating a busy week. Quietness means not needing to argue our side or prove our worth. We are simply quiet before Him.
  4. Confidence: This isn't blind optimism. It’s a profound, settled knowledge that He *can* and *will* see us through because He loves us.

Think about that. The strength isn't in the plan B, C, or D. The strength is in the unwavering confidence that the promise itself is solid.

Being a Disciple Anywhere

This principle is the heartbeat of the modern disciple. We are called to be Internet missionaries, disciples everywhere, all the time. Sometimes we feel like we need to be in the MTC, or perhaps we are in the thick of missionary preparation, and the pressure is immense. But even when we are just doing our laundry, or waiting in line, we can practice this quiet confidence.

If you’re feeling the pull of doubt, or if you’re struggling with a tough question an investigator might ask, I want you to remember this: God is good enough, and great enough, to keep that promise. We don't need to have all the answers right now; we just need to trust the One who does.

For those of you who want to deepen this study, I highly recommend diving into the scriptures through the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook. Sometimes seeing related insights or community reflections on a passage really helps solidify the understanding.

A Little Prep & A Little Invitation

As a small piece of missionary preparation, I encourage you this week: Identify one area where you have been trying to "manage" a situation or relationship using your own effort, and consciously choose to lay it at the feet of the Lord. Practice resting in that surrender.

If you are looking for more ways to build up our discipleship together, please join us this week for our weekly Disciple Challenge! It’s a low-stakes, high-reward way to practice applying these principles. Details are posted in the community feed.
