Finding the Bedrock: Where True Revelation Begins
We often look for signs in rocks or ancient sites, but true revelation is built on a strong spiritual foundation. A guide for every internet missionary.
There’s a captivating human fascination with conduits—the idea that a certain stone, a specific rock, or an ancient site can act as a direct window to the unseen world. Whether we talk about seeing stones in scripture or the mystery of the Temple Mount, it's natural to wonder, where does the power come from?
It’s easy to get lost in the lore, studying the specifics of where and how revelation was given. We might focus on the object—the rock, the stone, the artifact. But as returned missionaries, we learn quickly that the physical conduit is almost never the point; the point is the foundation upon which the light is cast.
The recent discussions about revelation and ancient sites brought this truth into sharp focus. If you've been following along, you might have seen some fascinating talks about the Bedrock, the deep, unshakeable foundation that supports everything built upon it. It reminds us that while we appreciate the history and the mystery of these places, our primary focus must always be on the *foundation* of our discipleship.
The Bedrock of Discipleship
Think of it this way: If the revelation comes through a rock, that rock is simply a physical manifestation. But the spiritual principle—the enduring truth—is the Bedrock. The Bedrock is the place where the Spirit can settle and where our covenant commitment must be rooted.
This idea has such immediate, practical application when we think about being an internet missionary. When we are talking to an investigator online, or when we are preparing for our own missions, the conversation shouldn't be centered on the perfect talk, the perfect story, or the perfect digital tool. It should be centered on the unchanging, eternal foundation of the gospel.
“The foundation isn't necessarily the Savior, but the foundation is our foundation that we put on the Savior.”
That quote, which echoes the weight of the gospel, is a powerful reminder. We are building our lives—and our ministry—on the Rock. The Spirit is the guide, the scripture is the blueprint, but our commitment to Christ is the foundation.
A Mission Prep Skill: Focusing on the Foundation
One of the best ways to sharpen our mission prep is to stop trying to memorize a thousand facts, and instead, focus on articulating the *core* foundational principles. What is the most essential truth about the plan of salvation that you want an investigator to understand, regardless of where or when you are meeting them? Is it the Atonement? Is it the concept of eternal families? Is it the necessity of faith?
When you feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of material we have to share, remember the Bedrock. What is the single, solid truth that cannot be shaken? Center your message there. Let the Spirit guide you to the deepest, most necessary truth, and let that truth be the anchor for your discussion.
Letting Davee Help You Build Your Foundation
This is where our wonderful AI co-pilot, Davee, shines. Instead of just giving you canned answers, Davee is trained as an AI Investigator. His specialty is walking you through the hardest, most thoughtful questions an investigator might ask. He forces us to move beyond surface-level answers and truly articulate the foundational principles of the gospel. If you're struggling with a concept, practice walking through it with Davee. It's the perfect way to build your doctrinal bedrock.
Deepening Your Own Bedrock
If you want to continue building a solid spiritual foundation, I highly recommend diving into the teachings of Iron Rod. The Book of Mormon, for example, is rich with stories of revelation given through rock and foundation. Consider picking up a volume on sacred history and seeing how the physical locations tie into the spiritual promises. You can find excellent discussions and readings related to this concept in LivingBook, especially within the Social Scripture Study layer, where highlights and related panels can guide you deeper into the source material.
If you prefer a more structured, real-time learning environment, please join us this week for a virtual Book Club focused on the early prophets. It’s a wonderful place to practice articulating foundational truths with other committed disciples. All links are in the weekly bulletin!
Keep building, disciples. Keep focusing on the Rock.
