Finding the Blessing in the 'Annoyances' of the Field

Brothers and sisters, friends, fellow disciples—if you’ve ever felt like the Lord’s timing was a little… *annoying*? Maybe the investigator seemed resistant, or perhaps the natural flow of a missionary discussion stalled right when you felt the Spirit lift. Maybe you’ve been studying scripture, and the passage just refuses to make immediate, perfect sense.

I remember a time in the field, feeling the weight of expectation. We were trying to teach a concept, and it just wouldn't land. It felt like we were hitting a brick wall. I was ready to feel discouraged, to think, "Maybe I'm not equipped enough for this."

But as I reflected on recent teachings—like the one we were studying from Exodus—I realized that the very moments that feel like stumbling blocks, the moments that frustrate our best efforts, are often where the Lord is preparing us for something deeper. When we are in the thick of the work, especially when we’re knee-deep in missionary preparation or even just trying to keep up with our own study goals, it’s easy to focus only on the immediate problem. We see the obstacle, and we feel the frustration. We forget to zoom out and see the bigger picture—the pattern of the Savior’s grace.

The principle we’re tapping into here is that nothing is truly wasted in the service of the Lord. Every question asked, every misunderstanding encountered, every time we have to pivot our testimony because our initial approach wasn't what the Spirit intended—that’s all curriculum. It’s all part of the refining process that makes us better disciples.
