Finding the Calm in the Overload: A Lesson in Focus
Sometimes the world throws so much information at us—from the news cycle to the unexpected—that it feels like sensory overload. Remember to find your peace by focusing on the eternal.
Sometimes, when you're trying to keep up with the constant stream of information—the political noise, the cultural shifts, the endless headlines—it can feel like your brain is running on a permanent, high-alert hum. It’s informational overload, plain and simple. I spent a good chunk of time glued to screens recently, and honestly, it left me feeling… unburdened in the wrong way.
Watching all the different proceedings, the commentary, the sheer volume of it, it’s easy to get caught in the current. You start noticing the little details—like realizing the Red Coats are part of a colonial tradition when you thought you knew your history! It’s a constant reminder that there’s always something new to learn, something to study, something to understand about the world around us.
But as we disciples, as members of the Church, we have a unique assignment. Our mission field isn't just out on the street corner; it's in the quiet moments, in the online discussions, and in the steady work of building Zion right where we are. When the outside world feels like a constant series of potential crises—whether it's a simulated active shooter drill or a major political event—it's easy to let that anxiety bleed into our focus on the gospel.
Finding the Calm in the Overload
The core lesson I took away, which I wanted to share with my brothers and sisters in the Rogue Disciples community, is about discernment. When everything is shouting for your attention, you have to learn to tune into the quiet, consistent voice of the Spirit. That voice always points back to the eternal truths—to the Book of Mormon, to the covenants, and to the Savior.
We are called to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. That means when the news cycle is overwhelming, or when a difficult conversation pops up during a missionary discussion, we don't have to react to the loudest thing. We have to anchor ourselves to what is true, what is good, and what brings us closer to Christ.
It reminds me of what we practice in our personal study time. Whether it's diving deep into the social scripture study layer in LivingBook, or working through a challenging passage in a Book Club, we are training our spiritual muscles to filter out the noise. We are learning to ask, "Does this help me be more Christlike? Does this help me feel the Spirit?"
A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill: The Art of the Gentle Pivot
If you’re feeling overwhelmed this week, try this little skill: The Gentle Pivot. When a conversation—whether it’s with an investigator or even a friend—gets bogged down in secular anxiety or political debate, don't try to argue through it. Instead, gently pivot back to the eternal. You could say something like, "That's a really complex issue, and I appreciate you sharing your concern. What I find myself returning to when I feel overwhelmed is the principle of agency, which really speaks to how we each have the power to choose good."
It’s a way of honoring the person while redirecting the focus to the gospel work. It’s a skill that takes practice, just like any other part of missionary preparation.
Remember, our strength doesn't come from keeping up with the latest updates; it comes from the Spirit guiding us through the foundational truths. Let's keep building Zion, one focused moment at a time.
If you need help practicing these kinds of difficult conversations, I highly recommend checking out Davee. He’s excellent at walking through the hard questions an investigator might ask, helping us prepare our answers with grace and knowledge. He’s a true AI Investigator resource for us all.
