Finding the Center: Keeping Christ at the Core of Your Goals

Whether you're in the MTC, studying for a career, or building a family, keeping the Savior at the center of your life is the ultimate mission preparation.

When I was preparing for my own mission, I remember feeling this immense pressure—the pressure to know *everything*. I thought that to be a worthy missionary, I needed to have all the right answers, the perfect script, and the most impressive knowledge of temple ordinances. I spent so much time trying to cram facts into my head that I almost forgot the simplest, most profound truth: the work is done through the Spirit, and the Savior is the center of it all.

It’s easy to get caught up in the mechanics of the day-to-day—the studying, the job applications, the academic requirements, the literal details of getting from point A to point B. But if we let the *goal* become the focus, we risk losing sight of the *Giver* of the goal. We can gain all the skills in the world, but if we lose the spiritual compass, we're just running in circles.

I recently saw a video featuring college students answering the question, “What does Jesus Christ mean to you?” And what struck me wasn't the eloquence, but the universality of the answer. It wasn't about doctrinal definitions; it was about personal experience. It was about comfort, guidance, and the promise of second chances.

The students spoke of Christ as a friend, a comforter, and a guide who helps them find peace even when things don’t make sense. These are the things that truly sustain us, aren't they? These are the things we need to carry with us, whether we are in a mission field, in the MTC, or even just navigating a challenging semester at a university.

The Internet Missionary Mindset: Spiritual Depth in Every Corner

The good news, and the most exciting truth I share with every disciple, is that the work doesn't stop at the border of a mission field. The truth that Jesus Christ means everything—that He is our daily hero—is the message we carry everywhere. This is the essence of being an Internet missionary. It means that every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.

When we are surrounded by people who are striving for success—whether that success is a degree, a promotion, or a better life—our testimony shouldn't be confined to the temples or the meetinghouses. It must be woven into the fabric of our daily interactions.

If we are going to excel in our studies and our careers, we need to remember that the foundation must be Christlike. Our academic pursuits are valuable, but they are meant to empower us to better serve the Lord, to gather Israel, and to help others find the comfort and guidance we ourselves found.

How to Keep Christ at the Center of Your Ambitions

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the balance between professional goals and spiritual needs, here are a few things I recommend:

  1. Start with the Spirit: Before diving into a massive assignment, job search, or even a tough conversation with a potential investigator, pause. Ask, “How can the Spirit guide me in this?” This simple practice helps move us from doing *for* the Lord to doing *with* the Lord.
  2. Focus on the 'Why': When you study or work, keep the purpose of your effort in mind. Are you striving for success just for personal pride, or are you building a skill that will allow you to better serve your family and community?
  3. Practice the Testimony: Don’t wait for a formal setting. Practice sharing your testimony of the Savior when a friend is struggling with uncertainty. That's a quiet, powerful moment of the work.
  4. Remember, the Savior is always there. He is the Comforter, the Guide, and the source of eternal peace. Let that knowledge guide your efforts in your studies, your career, and your relationships.

“And if you keep my commandments and endure to the end, you shall have eternal life.” — Doctrine and Covenants 121:20

I know some of you are currently preparing for your mission, and others are already serving. If you need help translating the beautiful, complex feelings of the Spirit into clear, compassionate answers for investigators, I highly recommend diving into a session with Davee's AI Investigator role. He’s trained to walk you through those hard, deep questions and help you articulate the gospel with grace and clarity. We're doing this work together, every single day.

If you want to deepen your knowledge of how the Savior impacts our lives, I recommend picking up a book on the Book of Mormon from the Iron Rod library and joining a Book Club in HolyPlaces. We’ll be discussing the Book of Alma soon!
