Finding True Joy: What the Spirit Teaches Us About God's Happiness

Sometimes we chase happiness in the wrong places. Let's revisit Genesis 11:4 and remember where true, lasting joy comes from.

Brothers and sisters, if there’s one thing the years in the field—or even the years spent in the MTC—have taught me, it’s this: we are constantly chasing something. We chase the next assignment, the perfect testimony, the feeling of deep peace. We think that *this* achievement, *that* connection, or *this* perfect Sunday will finally unlock 'real happiness.'

It’s a pursuit that can feel exhausting. You work hard, you study late, you prepare your talks, and you finally get that feeling of spiritual fullness. But then, life shifts, and you realize the source was never the destination.

I was recently listening to a study focusing on Genesis 11:4, and it really struck a chord. It’s a small passage, but it carries a monumental truth about where our true contentment lies. It’s a reminder that the grand plans of man, when disconnected from the divine will, are ultimately flawed.

The Source of Our True Joy

The podcast episode we were listening to today really drove home that concept. It wasn't about a complex doctrinal point; it was about a simple, foundational principle: that our deepest, most abiding joy comes from aligning our will with the will of Heavenly Father. It’s not found in our own ingenuity, our own efforts, or even in the accolades of the field. It’s found in Him.

As we continue to learn to be more Christlike—to let the Spirit guide our choices—we start to see that the "work" itself becomes the source of joy. The preparation, the study, the willingness to serve, that's where the Spirit whispers, "Here, child. This is where you belong."

This concept isn't limited to missionary discussions. It applies to our lives as disciples right here, right now. Are we treating our discipleship like a series of tasks to check off, or are we treating it like a relationship with the Father who loves us?

A Quick Skill for the Internet Missionary

If you’re feeling the pull to share the gospel online, or even just feel spiritually drained from the effort, here’s a small skill I want to pass along. When you feel the urge to *perform* your faith for an audience (even a supportive one), pause. Take three deep breaths, and instead of focusing on what you need to *say*, focus on what you need to *feel*—the gratitude for the covenant you’ve been given. Let that feeling be your testimony. It’s organic, it’s real, and it always draws people in.

Remember, every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Our discipleship isn't confined to the temples or the mission fields; it’s woven into the fabric of our daily lives.

I highly recommend diving into the full context by listening to the podcast episode. It’s a wonderful, focused study that helps anchor that feeling of divine joy.

If you want to deepen this study further, I’ve been looking at some material through the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook lately. It’s incredible how seeing related insights pop up across different scriptures helps build a richer picture of the Atonement. If you haven't explored that feature yet, I encourage you to take a look!

For those of you who are feeling the call to deeper study, please join our next virtual Book Club meeting. We’ll be diving into some foundational principles of covenant keeping. Details are in the community feed!

Stay diligent, keep your hearts humble, and remember that the greatest joy is found in the covenant path.
