Finding Your Unshakeable Path in the Field

Brothers and sisters, sometimes the weight of the world—or perhaps the weight of the calling—can feel immense. We read the scriptures, we study, we prepare for our mission talks, and we feel the Spirit guiding us. But what happens when the challenges don't come in neat, predictable study sessions? What happens when the difficulties feel like they are coming from every direction at once?

I was recently reflecting on the Psalms, specifically Psalm 91. It speaks with such profound poetry about protection—about the sheer number of trials that seem to surround us. The salmista speaks of ten thousand falling on our left, and ten thousand on our right, yet *we* are untouched.

When I first heard that passage, I thought it was a promise of immunity, a guarantee that life would be easy. But after some time in the field, and after talking with some of my district leaders, I learned something more nuanced, something that really hits you right in the heart of missionary preparation.

It’s not that nothing can touch you. It’s that your *refuge* changes what can touch you. The difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling divinely protected isn't the absence of trouble; it’s the *location* of your trust. It’s knowing that even when the circumstances around you are chaotic—when the investigator has a difficult question, when the culture seems resistant, when the logistical hurdles pile up—your anchor point remains steady.

The Spirit as Our Unshakeable Refuge

This principle—that we are safe *in* Him—is the bedrock of discipleship. It’s the difference between surviving a hard assignment and actually gaining eternal strength from it. When we focus on our own strength, we get tired. When we focus on the Spirit, we are sustained.
