What homeschooler doesn't love a good book? Our read-aloud time is a highlight of our days – a chance to connect as a family and dive into stories together. If you’re looking for some new adventures for your crew, I'm sharing five of our favorite read-alouds from the last school year. These books brought so much laughter and connection into our home, and I think they’ll do the same for yours!

Finding the Magic in Read-Alouds

There’s something truly special about sharing a story with your kids. Beyond just entertainment, reading aloud builds vocabulary, fosters a love of reading, and creates lasting memories. Plus, it’s just plain fun! If you’re curious about the incredible benefits of read-aloud time, check out this quick video for more inspiration.

I’ve included links to all of these books in the description below, as well as a link to my Amazon storefront where you can find even more homeschool resources. Let’s get started!

Our Top 5 Read-Aloud Picks

1. The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

This series has been a huge hit in our house! We’ve worked our way through all four books over the last couple of years. The story follows four gifted children who are recruited for a secret mission. It's full of clever puzzles, quirky characters, and plenty of adventure – perfect for older kids (middle school level or as a read-aloud). My oldest son has been telling everyone he knows they *need* to read it!

2. The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart

Another winner by Trenton Lee Stewart! This one felt particularly engaging, and it’s another action-packed adventure with a fascinating mystery. I especially enjoyed acting out the voices of the different characters – it made the story even more fun for everyone.

3. Benjamin Pratt and the Keepers of the School by Andrew Clements

We enjoyed this one as an audiobook! Andrew Clements is the author of Frindle, another fantastic read for kids. This mystery follows Benjamin as he uncovers secrets connected to an old school watch. It’s a great choice for families who love a bit of intrigue.

4. George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol’s Orphans

This biographical story is a beautiful example of faith in action. It's an inspiring tale of a man who dedicated his life to caring for orphaned children. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss compassion, service, and trusting in God's provision with your children.

5. Matilda by Roald Dahl

No read-aloud list would be complete without Roald Dahl! Matilda is a classic for a reason – it’s funny, heartwarming, and celebrates the power of reading. Whether you choose the paperback or the audiobook version, this one’s sure to be a hit.

Connecting with Your Family Through Stories

Reading aloud is more than just a homeschool activity; it’s a chance to create memories, nurture a love of learning, and strengthen family bonds. I hope these suggestions inspire you to gather your kids close and embark on some literary adventures together!
