Fixing the Destination: Charting Our Course Toward the Celestial City

True progress in the covenant path requires fixing our destination—the eternal destination—and charting our course by the Spirit's direction.

Brother/Sister, when we speak of the covenants we have made, of the eternal progression, or the glorious reunion with our Heavenly Father, it is easy to get caught up in the *what*—the ordinances, the required study, the callings. We become so focused on the mechanics of discipleship that we risk losing sight of the ultimate *why*.

Elder Corbridge’s recent discourse serves as a sharp, necessary reminder: we cannot drift into the promised destination. No one, by chance or good intentions alone, arrives at the temple endowment or the celestial kingdom. The journey requires intentionality, a fixed point of focus, and a relentless alignment with the divine course.

The Destination is Fixed

We are taught to be diligent students of the scriptures, to keep our covenants, and to serve faithfully. These are the 'what's' of our discipleship. We are told to repent, to forgive, to pay our tithes, and to magnify our callings. And these instructions are sacred and necessary. However, Elder Corbridge reminds us that simply knowing *what* to do is insufficient. We must internalize the *why*.

“Purpose is the why, and if you don’t understand the why, all the what’s will make little difference.”

Our destination, as Latter-day Saints, is not merely a good life, or a successful earthly career. Our destination is the fullness of the plan of salvation: reunion with our Father, receiving the gifts of the Spirit, and helping our brethren and sisters do the same. This is the eternal North Star that must guide every study session, every decision regarding our temple attendance, and every word spoken in conference.

Charting the Course: Point A to Point B

To chart a course, we must know two things: where we are (Point A), and where we are going (Point B). If we are vague on Point B—if we treat the celestial kingdom as one of many possible outcomes—then our efforts become scattered, leading nowhere, no matter how fast we run.

Consider the analogy of the lunar landing. The mission was singular, the destination fixed. The entire endeavor was plotted toward that single, divine target. Our potential, brothers and sisters, reaches far beyond the 'moon' of temporal success. It is fixed upon the covenant path.

This requires a deeper, scholarly commitment to our doctrine. It means moving beyond merely *avoiding* sin (the 'what') and instead fighting to change our hearts to become new creatures, aligning our very will with the Father's will (the 'why'). This is the work of the Spirit, and it requires the focused study of the restored gospel.

Look Where You Want to Go

The principle is simple yet profound: “You go where you look.” This is not merely a suggestion for vision boarding; it is a statement of spiritual law. Our focus dictates our trajectory. If our eyes are fixed on the glory of the restored gospel, on the living prophets, on the ordinances of the temple, and on the reality of eternal life, then our feet will naturally follow that gaze.

This is the essence of Operation Iron Rod: to sharpen our focus, to deepen our understanding of the *why* behind the covenants, and to use the light of revealed scripture to plot our course with unwavering certainty. We must treat our scripture study not as an academic exercise, but as celestial navigation.

I invite you all to listen to the full episode of the Stand Forever podcast. Reflect deeply on the distinction between merely *knowing* the commandments and understanding the eternal *necessity* behind them. Where are your eyes fixed this week? Let us commit to looking only where the Savior has shown us—toward the Father and the eternal life He purchased for us.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'what' refers to the commandments and actions (e.g., keeping the word of wisdom, paying tithes). The 'why' is the underlying purpose—the desire to change our hearts and become new creatures, aligning with the Father's will.

It means arriving at the celestial destination by chance, luck, or mere effort without the necessary, focused direction and alignment with the plan of salvation.
