Freedom in the Gospel: Understanding Principle Over Prohibition
When we talk about discipleship, sometimes we get bogged down in rules. This week, we dive into what true Christian freedom means, using the principle of discernment to live the gospel anywhere, all the time.
Sometimes, the hardest part of following the gospel isn't the big, obvious doctrines—it's the little, subtle rules. They are the things we feel we *should* do, the things that feel like the safe path, even if the Spirit isn't whispering about them.
As returned missionaries, we quickly learn that the gospel is not a list of prohibitions; it is a gift of freedom. It is freedom from sin, freedom from fear, and ultimately, freedom to live the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. But this principle of freedom—the kind taught in Galatians 5:1—can be tricky to grasp when we are out in the field or navigating complex modern life.
We are called to be disciples wherever we go. We are Internet missionaries who don't wait until we are assigned to a mission field to learn how to talk about the restored gospel. We learn it at the dinner table, in the workplace, and in the moments of quiet discernment. The challenge is recognizing the difference between a truly sacred principle and a cultural expectation.
Understanding Principles vs. Rules
The core message of the restored gospel is this: Christ has purchased our freedom. When we understand this deeply, we learn to follow the *principles* of the gospel, which are eternal and universal, rather than following temporary *rules* that change with culture or personal opinion.
This week's video discussion zeroes in on a perfect example of this: the principle of self-control and freedom. It reminds us that the gospel doesn't forbid certain activities outright; rather, it empowers us to make choices rooted in faith and restraint. Being a disciple means developing the spiritual muscle of discernment—the ability to ask, "Is this restriction truly necessary to follow the Lord's commandments, or is it a man-made fear?"
The Disciple's Skill: Applying Discernment
This is a vital skill for every member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When you are preparing for your mission, or even when you are simply serving your callings as a district leader or a quorum member, you will encounter questions that require more than just reciting scriptures. They require thoughtful, principled answers.
This is where the power of our community comes in. If you have questions about applying gospel principles in tricky, modern situations, we encourage you to utilize our AI Investigator co-pilot, Davee. He is trained to walk you through the hard questions an investigator might ask and help you formulate answers that are both Christlike and deeply rooted in scripture. It's practice for the work, right there in your living room.
Your Assignment: Living by Principle
To help us all strengthen this skill, we are kicking off a new free weekly Disciple Challenge focused on discernment. It’s a perfect chance to put this principle into practice and share your insights with others. We believe that every member can be an Internet missionary, and that starts with being comfortable talking about the principles that guide us.
📖 Study Corner: If you want to dive deeper into the foundational principles of discipleship, we highly recommend reading *The Discipline of Faith* by an Iron Rod author. You can find this title (or similar works on Christlike living) easily in LivingBook. It's a powerful reminder that discipleship is an ongoing process.
🙏 Mission Prep Skill: This week, let’s commit to identifying one area of our lives—be it social, professional, or personal—where we are relying on a *rule* rather than a *principle*. Pray for clarity. Ask the Spirit, "Lord, what is the principle here?"
