From Show Stall to Street: Bringing a Hemi-Swapped C10 to Life
This massive C10 project nearly got stalled by a simple fuel issue, but the real work was in the custom fabrication needed to link that Hemi power to the transmission.
There’s nothing quite like the smell of hot oil, burnt fuel, and victory. For the Rogue Gearheads, a project car that finally roars to life after weeks of tinkering is the best kind of therapy. We were looking at a classic 1982 Chevrolet C10, given a serious upgrade package: a 2009 Gen III Hemi, Eagle heads, and a 46RE transmission. It was an absolute beast, but even at the show, it was only managing a few sputtering seconds of life.
When the show ended, the adrenaline wore off, and the diagnosis began. The car was running, but it was coughing, sputtering, and just plain refusing to breathe deep. We realized the issue wasn't the motor itself, but the support system. It came down to fuel pressure.
Fuel Flow and Finite Power
The culprit? Low fuel PSI. The initial setup was failing to feed the beast properly. We ended up digging deep into the tune, replacing the fuel injector squirter machines, and, critically, boosting the old fuel PSIs on the system from 43 to 58. Once the fuel was flowing right, the Hemi roared back to life. It sounded incredible, putting serious muscle into that old Chevy frame.
But making the engine run is only half the battle. The real mechanical challenge? Linking that raw, modern power to the vintage transmission.
Custom Fabrication: Linking Horsepower to the Pedal
The 46RE transmission is electronically controlled, which means we weren't just dealing with brute force; we were dealing with precise hydraulics. The goal was to connect the throttle input all the way through to the transmission's internal controls. Unfortunately, the original bracketry was a mess—a mix of parts seemingly lifted from different eras and vehicles. Nothing was designed for a Hemi-swapped C10.
This is where the master mechanic mindset kicks in. We had to stop thinking about buying a pre-fab kit and start thinking about custom geometry. The plan was to bring the throttle cable right into the pedal area, requiring us to fabricate custom brackets and mountings. The Long List of Fixes
The list of remaining tasks is long: getting the charging wheels sorted, fixing the radiator and fan connections, and dealing with the power steering reservoir. But we got the heart beating and the controls linked. This C10 is now ready to see the back roads of beautiful Tennessee, proving that sometimes, the biggest upgrades aren't the engine swap, but the custom brackets you weld up yourself.
