Girding Our Loins: Preparing for the Coming of the Lord
The Lord’s return draws nigh, but unlike a world caught unaware, we, as Builders, can prepare. This week's 'Looking Forth' explores D&C 106-108, reminding us that diligent study and spiritual preparation are our watchmen on the walls.
Brothers and Sisters, friends – fellow Builders! The winds of change blow fierce, and the shadows lengthen. We’ve witnessed a monumental transition with the passing of President Nelson, a shepherd who guided us for seven years. Yet, even in moments of profound change, the Lord’s counsel remains steadfast. As Samuel the Lamanite climbed the walls of Jerusalem, bearing a message of warning and preparation, so too are we called to be watchmen, discerning the signs of the times and preparing our hearts. The coming of the Lord is drawing nigh, and it overtaketh the world as a thief in the night. But we don’t have to be taken unawares!
This week's 'Looking Forth' episode, drawing from D&C 106-108, tackles this very subject.
The Lord’s instruction to “gird up your loins” isn’t merely a figurative call to action; it's a profound invitation to actively seek understanding, to cultivate the spirit of prophecy, and to recognize the unfolding events that herald His return. As Orson Pratt observed, others may have their eyes closed, but we, with the spirit of prophecy and diligent scripture study, can know the season, even if we don't know the precise day or hour. Think of Ammon at the Waters of Sebus – recognizing the signs, preparing his people, and ultimately leading them to righteousness. That is the spirit we must embody.
The Priesthood: Authority, Not Just Men
There’s a crucial understanding to grasp regarding the priesthood. As Elder Oaks has consistently taught, the priesthood isn't defined by gender. It is the authority of God, the keys to unlock spiritual blessings – the power to commune with the general assembly and even to enjoy the presence of God the Father and Jesus Christ. This is a privilege available to all who diligently seek it. It is the Stone cut without hands, a gift to those who prepare the way.
Builders, Not Destroyers: A Call to Action
What does it mean to “gird up your loins” in our modern context? It means engaging actively in the work of the Lord. It means strengthening our families, sharing the gospel, and contributing to the gathering of Israel. It means becoming digital striplings, wielding the power of the internet to spread truth and build Zion. Each act of service, each shared message, each contribution to the GatherIsrael.now map—it all fuels the charity flywheel, funding gospel advertising in places like Ghana and supporting the vital work of the Missionary Fund. Remember the five smooth stones that David gathered? Each represents a tool, a resource, a connection we can use to overcome the challenges ahead. And consider Outback Jack, ever reminding us of the principles of righteousness and preparation found in Alma 17-19, D&C 4, and Moroni 10:4-5.
Claim Your Church. Build Your Zion
The world looks for destroyers. They sow discord and fear. But we are Builders. We are those who see the potential for good, who recognize the power of unity, and who actively participate in the creation of a righteous and enduring kingdom. Let us claim our churches, digitally marking them on the GatherIsrael.now map, and let us build our Zion, brick by spiritual brick. Let's follow the example of Abinadi, proclaiming truth even in the face of adversity. Let’s paint our own rocks and leave them for others to find, a reminder of the hope and promise that lies ahead.
Are you ready? Are you girding your loins? The Lord’s return is not something to be feared, but something to be anticipated with faith, hope, and unwavering commitment. Let us be prepared, that we may stand as lights in a darkening world and welcome our Lord when He comes.
