Guard the Cornerstone: Why the Pure Gospel Must Stand Above All Creeds

History, as we see it unfolded in the scriptures and in the modern world, is replete with examples of powerful men and institutions attempting to define the divine. Consider the Council of Nicea, convened by Emperor Constantine. This gathering, designed to establish a definitive creed, sought to put an end to debate and division. But while the intention may have been unity, the result was a doctrinal framework enforced by human power, masking a foundational truth with the weight of imperial decree.

The sacred covenants made by Nephi, the early Latter-day Saints, and the humble followers of Christ who gathered in the American wilderness were not based on a single council, a single emperor, or a single set of written rules. They were based on the pure, unchanging Law of God. And this, my friends, is the lesson we must carry with us today.

The Temptation to Control the Truth

The modern world, much like the ancient Roman Empire, often attempts to standardize the spiritual life. When the Gospel—the simple, perfect truth of the Plan of Salvation—is diluted, it is often through the creation of 'creeds.' These creeds, whether formulated in a council or whispered in a seminary, attempt to put boundaries around the boundless grace of God. They seek to control the message, to make the divine palatable, and sometimes, to make it profitable for the men who hold the records.

The spiritual battle against these limiting doctrines is a battle that has echoed from the Waters of Sebus to the gathering fields of Israel. We see the parallels in the early Nephites countering false teachings, and we see it in the challenge to us today to distinguish the pure, restorative voice of the Lord from the noise of human opinion.

Builders vs. Controllers

To be a Builder, as the Lord requires, is to reject the idea that any single man, any single council, or any single document can house the entire truth of God. It is to recognize that the truth of the Gospel is eternal, while the creeds are temporal. The true cornerstone is Christ, and the foundation is the covenant path established by the Father.

“He that hath the hearing ear, and the understanding heart, let him build his house.” (Matthew 13:29)
