Guard Your Focus: Keeping Our Eyes Fixed on the Savior in a Distracting World
Our modern world is a minefield of distractions. Let's learn how to keep our focus fixed on Christ, no matter what pulls our attention away.
Brothers and sisters, if I asked you right now to list the apps you've deleted and then redownloaded, I suspect a lot of hands would go up. We are masters of the digital distraction, aren't we? We cling to them, sometimes returning to them like a dog to its vomit. It’s a powerful, almost physical pull that tugs at our attention, and in the quiet moments of missionary preparation, or even in the quiet moments of our own homes, that distraction can become a real obstacle in our discipleship.
It’s easy to get caught up in the noise. We hear it in the whispers of the world, in the endless scroll of our feeds, and sometimes, even in our own thoughts. We are called to be Internet missionaries, to be disciples anywhere, all the time, but that requires a focus that feels almost superhuman.
The Danger of Distraction in the Field
I was listening to a recent podcast discussion, and the theme that kept coming back was focus—keeping our eyes on the Savior. It brought to mind a story about a major train accident, where the cause wasn't mechanical failure, but simple, repeated distraction from a cell phone. It was sobering to hear how something so seemingly innocuous could cost lives.
Think about that. We are trying to build Zion, we are trying to keep the pure gospel alive, and the greatest enemy we face isn't always a visible opponent; sometimes, it's the tiny, irresistible pull of what demands our immediate, fleeting attention. As we prepare for missions, or as we are in our own local wards, we need to treat our focus like the most precious commodity it is.
A Little Skill for Our Daily Lives: The 'Attention Audit'
As a small piece of missionary preparation for all of us—whether you are in MTC, already in the field, or just studying for your next mission discussion—I want to challenge you to do an 'Attention Audit' this week. For one day, pay attention to *what* pulls your focus. Is it a notification sound? A thought about what you need to buy? A snippet of gossip? When you notice the distraction, don't judge yourself; just notice it. Then, gently, but firmly, redirect your thoughts back to the Savior, or back to the scripture you were studying.
This isn't about perfection; it’s about practice. It’s about building the spiritual muscle memory to say, "No, not right now. I need to keep my eyes on Christ."
If you want to hear more about this powerful message regarding focus and the Book of Joshua, I highly recommend listening to the full episode of the podcast. It really unpacks how vital this focus is as we live in these last days.
Remembering the Source
When we feel scattered, when the weight of the world seems to pull us in a million directions, we must remember where the true source of light is. We are disciples of Jesus Christ. Our primary focus, our ultimate goal, must always be Him. If we keep Him at the center of our thoughts, our priorities, and our actions, the distractions—while they will always be present—will lose some of their power over us.
I encourage you to use the resources available to deepen this focus. If you are studying scriptures, check out the HolyPlaces for a Book Club or Bible Study Group. Stay diligent, keep your covenants close, and let's keep our eyes fixed on the Savior together. He is the best focus we could ever have.
