Holding Fast to the Truth: A Call to Christ's Love in Every Corner of the Field

Brothers and sisters, sometimes the material we encounter out in the field, or even when we’re studying in our living rooms, can feel like it’s designed to shake the very foundations of what we know to be true. You hear arguments, you read doctrines, and you’re confronted with practices that seem to defy basic principles of love, protection, and righteousness.

It can be jarring. It can make you pause, and you might even feel a little overwhelmed by the sheer weight of what you’re learning about the gospel, or what you’re seeing presented to others. But remember what the Spirit whispers to us: The gospel of Jesus Christ is the light that exposes all darkness.

Recently, I was looking at some discussions—and I know some of you have been too, perhaps through Sam Shamoun's excellent work—that really hammered home the fundamental differences between the doctrines of Christ and those of other faiths. When the contrast is that stark—when the moral foundations of one belief system seem to contradict the sacred, protective love Christ models for every person, especially the vulnerable—it’s a powerful, Spirit-filled moment of missionary preparation.

We are taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that the sanctity of life, the protection of the innocent, and the universal nature of Christ’s Atonement are cornerstones of our faith. When we see doctrines that seem to sanction practices that are morally indefensible by any standard of divine law, it isn't just an academic debate; it's a matter of eternal principle.

It’s easy, when we’re deep in study, to get caught up in the details of the debate—the specific verses, the historical claims. And while those details matter, what I want to leave you with today, my dear disciples, is the *heart* of the message. The message is always: Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. He is the standard of righteousness.

When you are out there, whether you are in a formal missionary discussion, or just having a casual chat with someone in the community, remember to anchor everything back to Christ. Don't just counter their point; point them toward the Savior. Point them to Matthew 19:14—the Father welcoming the little children to Him.

Instead of feeling defensive, let’s remember to guide the inquirer back to the core truth: that our Savior’s love is boundless, protective, and perfect.

This is the work. This is what the Spirit calls us to do: to testify of the restored gospel, not with anger, but with the gentle, persistent love of a returned missionary who knows what it’s like to feel the Spirit guide you back home.
