Keeping Our Eyes Fixed: Guarding Against Deception in the Digital Field

Brothers and sisters, as we pour ourselves into the work—whether we’re in the field, in the MTC, or right here in our living rooms serving as internet missionaries—we are constantly being tested. The Spirit is a wonderful guide, but the world, and sometimes even the whispers of the adversary, will try to distract us from the pure, beautiful, and unchanging truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

It’s a heavy responsibility, isn't it? To be a watchman on the tower. We want to help every soul we encounter find the peace that comes from knowing the true path back to the Father. And that means we have to be diligent students of doctrine, always checking our bearings.

Recently, I was reflecting on a talk by Elder M. Russell Ballard regarding false prophets and false teachers. It hit home, especially when you consider how fast information—and misinformation—can travel these days. The principle remains timeless: we must anchor ourselves to the established, divinely appointed channels.

The Importance of the Proper Channel

Elder Ballard’s counsel was crystal clear: we can accept nothing as authoritative but what comes directly through the appointed channel of the priesthood. When we, as Latter-day Saints, look to any other source—any source outside the constituted organizations—we are opening ourselves up to the seductive influence of Satan. It’s not about suspicion; it’s about *discipline* in our learning and our testimony.

Think about it in the context of our own discipleship. When we are in missionary discussions, or even when we are studying scriptures in a Book Club, we are gathering around a shared, authoritative source. The power of the priesthood keys, held and exercised through our living prophets, is what keeps the true order intact. It’s the anchor that keeps us from being tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine.

Being Watchmen in the Digital Age

Being an internet missionary today means we are often the first line of defense. We are the ones who have to gently guide an investigator who might be reading conflicting accounts online. We have to be able to say, with love and clarity, "Brother/Sister, while that information may seem compelling, the established doctrine, taught through the proper channels, guides us to this truth."

This isn't just about doctrine; it’s about *being Christlike*. It means that when we feel confused or overwhelmed by conflicting voices, we pause, we pray, and we return to the foundational teachings: repentance, the Atonement, and the plan of salvation.

This week, I want us to focus on strengthening our personal doctrinal foundation. Here’s a little skill for our next time we have a missionary discussion or encounter a challenging question online: When you hear a claim that sounds too good to be true, or too radical to be true, pause and ask: "What is the *source* of this teaching, and how does it align with the core doctrines taught by the Prophet and Apostles today?" This simple question redirects the focus from the *claim* to the *authority*.

Remember, the Spirit testifies of truth, and the truth is always consistent. Let’s commit this week to being careful students, careful teachers, and most importantly, careful disciples. Let’s keep the light shining brightly!
