Keeping Our Eyes Fixed on the Light: Standing Against the Shadows

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to walk in the covenant path, the noise of the world gets louder. It’s easy, especially when we’re out in the field or even just scrolling through the feed, to get caught up in the smoke and mirrors. We see glimpses of the occult, the mysteries, the sensational—and it can feel overwhelming.

It reminds me of something I was pondering after watching a recent talk. The speaker was talking about how easily we can get pulled into things that *look* supernatural, things that promise answers without the covenant, without the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We’ve all seen the depictions in horror movies—witches, fortune-telling, channeling spirits. It’s all packaged up for a good scare, isn't it?

But as returned missionaries, as disciples who have been taught to discern the Spirit from the adversary’s whispers, we know better. We know that while the *enemy* is real, the *power* that overcomes him is infinitely greater. We aren't called to live in fear, but we are called to be *aware*.

Discerning the Spiritual Realm

The message was clear: the spiritual realm is real. There are principalities, darkness, and opposition. If we pretend they don't exist, we leave ourselves vulnerable. Paul reminds us, “We are not unaware of his schemes.” This isn't meant to scare us into paralysis; it’s meant to equip us with knowledge so we can stand firm on the Rock.

When we study the Book of Acts, we see this play out perfectly. Think about the early church in Philippi. They are gathering by the riverside, a place of prayer, and suddenly, they encounter this slave woman—a conduit for divination, linked to the myths of Apollo and the serpent. It’s a perfect illustration of the enemy’s tactics: distraction, false knowledge, and appealing to curiosity rather than truth.

What was the key takeaway for me? It wasn't the drama; it was the *response*. The disciples didn't panic. They didn't get sucked into the spectacle. They kept pointing to the living Word, to the power in the Name of Yeshua, and they kept inviting people to the covenant—to the Savior.

That’s our mission prep skill right there, friends. When the investigator brings up something sensational, something that seems to come from a place of deep, mysterious knowledge—whether it’s a tarot card reading, a deep dive into esoteric history, or just intense skepticism—our job isn't to argue semantics. Our job is to testify to the living, saving power of the Gospel. We point them back to the Savior.

Finding Our Power Source

The enemy’s tactics are designed to make us focus on the *darkness*. But the gospel teaches us that the greatest blessing comes *from* the opposition. It forces us to rely solely on the power of the Spirit and the covenant path. We learn to draw our true power not from dusty texts or whispered secrets, but from the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

As we continue our efforts—whether we are in the MTC, serving in a stake center, or simply having a midweek scripture study—let’s remember that our testimony is our shield. Let’s keep our focus on the covenant path, on building Zion, and on being disciples who are both deeply knowledgeable and profoundly humble.
