Keeping Our Eyes Fixed: Standing Firm When the World Questions the Gospel
Sometimes the hardest part of the work isn't the questions, but the pressure to compromise. Learn from the blind man in John 9 how to keep your spiritual sight fixed on the Savior.
When I was in the field, I remember a discussion with a young missionary who was feeling discouraged. He was constantly running into people—neighbors, family members, even people at stake conferences—who were critical of the gospel. They didn't attack the doctrine, necessarily, but they attacked the *messenger*. They questioned the process, the timing, the validity of our claims, and he started to feel the weight of it. He was beginning to doubt if his conviction was strong enough to withstand the relentless pushback.
It hit me then, and I want to share this with you, my brothers and sisters. The pressure to compromise is perhaps the greatest challenge of being a disciple anywhere, all the time. It's the invisible pressure that tries to make us soften our testimony just to keep the peace.
The account in John 9 is a powerful snapshot of this struggle. Jesus heals a man born blind. Suddenly, the critics swarm him. They don't challenge the healing itself; they challenge the *source* of the healing. They whisper, "He's not a good guy," "He's a sinner," and they tell the man exactly how he should view Jesus. They offer him an escape hatch: accept their version of reality and be safe from the social consequences.
The man, however, doesn't fold. He looks at those religious leaders and says, "I don't know anything about Jesus being a sinner. All I know is that I was blind, and now I can see."
Think about that moment. The critics had the institutional power, the cultural clout, the ability to ostracize him. He had nothing but the gift of sight. And that gift—that spiritual sight—was what dictated his loyalty. His loyalty was with Jesus, the one who had given him the greatest gift of his life.
The Gift of Conviction
This is the core lesson for us today, whether you are getting ready for your first mission, serving as a returned missionary in your district, or simply having a challenging conversation with a neighbor about the plan of salvation. What has the Savior done for *you*? What gift has He given you that is worth standing up for, even when it’s unpopular?
The critics in John 9 were never the ones who had done the miracle. Jesus was. The gift wasn't a little charity or a moment of pleasant conversation; it was spiritual sight, salvation, and the knowledge of the covenant path. And that's what dictates our conviction.
A Prep Skill: Maintaining Spiritual Sight
When we face criticism—whether it comes from a skeptical investigator or from the noise of the internet—it's easy to feel defensive or to soften our language to make the conversation smoother. But we must remember that our primary allegiance is not to maintaining social harmony; it is to the Savior who has opened our eyes. Our conviction must be rooted in the magnitude of the gift we've received.
This is where we can lean into our tools. If you are preparing for mission discussions and worried about a tough question, remember to use Davee. Living the Work in the Online Age
The reality of being a disciple in the 21st century is that we are all, by nature, Internet missionaries. We are called to be Christlike in our online interactions, our work, and our daily lives. When someone expresses disapproval of our beliefs online, or even in a casual setting, we must ask ourselves: What is the greatest gift I have received? And how does that gift dictate my response?
I encourage you to strengthen your doctrinal foundation. If you are looking for deep dives into conviction, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings found in *Iron Rod*. It is a profound read that will help anchor your understanding of the gospel principles.
