Knowing the Adversary: Standing Firm in the Power of Christ

When you’re in the field, whether you’re in a mission or simply walking the halls of your local meetinghouse, you’re going to encounter opposition. It might not come in the form of a dramatic spiritual attack, but sometimes it comes as a subtle whisper of doubt, a challenging question, or a feeling of spiritual heaviness. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, like you’re wrestling with an invisible opponent.

But here’s a truth I learned years ago—and I still have to remember it every morning: spiritual opposition isn't new. The adversary has always been there, and knowing his methods and names can actually strip him of some of his power over us.

Sometimes I think back to my own missionary preparation days. We were taught that the enemy is smart, resourceful, and skilled at sowing seeds of doubt. We focused so much on *what* to say, and not nearly enough on *who* we were talking to, or *who* was trying to distract us. The Gospel isn't just a set of answers; it's a shield forged by the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Understanding the spiritual forces at play can help us understand the ultimate stakes of the work. It helps us focus on the source of all light and life—the Savior.

The Light That Overcomes the Darkness

The scriptures are remarkably clear that while the adversary is real, his power is utterly limited. He is an adversary, not a god. He is a liar, and his power is only in deception.

We have a deep, incredible truth: the victory belongs to Christ. When we focus on the radiant light that is Jesus Christ—the true Daystar, the source of life, the Son of the Morning—every whisper of doubt, every manipulative question, and every attempt to draw us away from the restored Gospel is rendered powerless.

This isn't meant to scare us; it’s meant to equip us. It’s a reminder that our ultimate defense is gospel knowledge and a deep, abiding reliance on the Spirit.

Focusing on the Source of Light

When you study the names the scriptures give the adversary—the Daystar, the Son of the Morning, the Anointed Cherub—you start to see a pattern. These titles all point back to the incredible contrast: the beautiful, perfect, eternal light of God versus the self-proclaimed, fallen brilliance of the enemy.

That contrast should be the most powerful tool in your belt. Every time you feel the weight of doubt, remember the source of your strength. Remember that the light you carry is the light of the resurrected Savior.

This isn't just doctrine; it's practical missionary preparation. It's about knowing your testimony so well, and knowing the plan of salvation so deeply, that no worldly challenge can shake your conviction.

A Quick Mission-Prep Skill: The Redirect

The next time you are in a missionary discussion, and the investigator raises a question designed to derail you—a question about science, or politics, or the nature of God—don't get defensive. Instead, practice the 'Redirect.' Acknowledge the question's complexity, but gently pivot back to the central, unifying truth of the Atonement. For example: “That’s a really important question, and one that theologians debate, but ultimately, what gives us the assurance of eternal life is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.”

This skill keeps the focus on the Savior, which is where the real power is found.
