Laughter, Learning, and the Lord's Work: Finding Joy in the Field

Sometimes the best lessons in the field—or even in the MTC—come wrapped up in the most awkward, hilarious moments.

When I think back to my own mission days, I often picture the serious moments: the heartfelt missionary discussions, the earnest study of the Book of Mormon, the quiet moments of revelation with a companion. Those are the moments we cherish, the ones that truly cement our testimony. But what I’m realizing lately, as I reflect on the whole experience, is that the Lord often uses the *funny* moments to keep us going.

It’s easy, when you’re focused on the weight of the work, to think that every moment needs to be solemn, perfectly prepared, and entirely serious. But if you’re not laughing, if you’re not having some genuine, shared moment of joy with your companions, are you really doing the work in the Spirit-filled way the Lord intends? I used to think that was impossible. You have to be serious to be sincere, right?

I watched a video recently detailing an experience from a mission in Nashville, and it hit me like a revelation. The whole saga of the "jumper"—a piece of clothing that sounded like it belonged in a time capsule! The confusion between the district leader, the zone leader, and the sheer absurdity of buying denim overalls at Goodwill just to wear them to a district meeting where the Stake President was going to show up...

It sounds ridiculous, but it was perfect. It was a masterclass in maintaining testimony while simultaneously being utterly ridiculous. It taught me that the Spirit doesn't always whisper in quiet scripture study; sometimes, it roars out in laughter during a wardrobe malfunction at a district meeting.

The Spirit and the Silly Stuff

As returned missionaries, or even as lifelong disciples right here on the Sovereign.ink network, we often feel the pressure to be perfect. We want to be the ideal disciple, the perfect representative of the gospel. We study the manuals, we prepare our talks, we review our scriptures until we can recite them in our sleep. That preparation is vital—it’s the scaffolding for the gospel. But the laughter, the shared absurdity, that’s the mortar that keeps the whole structure from crumbling under the weight of expectation.

It reminded me that being an internet missionary isn't just about posting scripture quotes. It's about being a disciple anywhere, all the time. It’s about having the humility to laugh at yourself when you mess up, and the grace to laugh with your companions when they do. It’s about remembering that the goal isn't flawless execution; the goal is sincere effort guided by the Spirit.

If you’re heading into mission prep, or if you’re already out in the field, I encourage you to intentionally build in moments of joy. Don't let the seriousness of the work eclipse the joy of the covenant path. Those shared, slightly embarrassing memories are what you’ll cling to when the going gets tough.

We are all disciples learning this journey together. Whether you’re in the MTC, deep in study with your Book Club, or just having a quiet moment reviewing scriptures via the social scripture study feed in LivingBook, remember to look for the laughter. It’s a divine indicator that you’re on the right track.

If this story brought a smile to your face, I invite you to share it! Maybe you have a story of an awkward moment that actually deepened your faith? Drop it in the comments below. And while you're here, if you want to dive deeper into how to handle those tricky questions an investigator might throw at you, I highly recommend spending some time with Davee. He’s fantastic at walking us through those challenging 'what if' scenarios in his AI Investigator role.

For those who want to keep the momentum going, we’re hosting a virtual fellowship this week. It’s a chance to share experiences—the serious ones and the wonderfully silly ones. Check the pinned posts for the link and join us!

Frequently Asked Questions

A jumper, in this story, was an overall-looking dress, described as being like denim overalls, which caused confusion during a district meeting.

The main takeaway is that even the most awkward or funny moments can be part of the Lord's plan and are vital for keeping the missionary effort going.

You can find Book Clubs and Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces, or engage in the social scripture study layer inside LivingBook.
