Letting Go of the Steering Wheel: Trusting the Spirit's Direction in the Work

Sometimes we try to steer our own lives and our efforts in the work, only to find ourselves exhausted. Learning to yield to the Spirit's guidance is the greatest preparation for discipleship.

Have you ever found yourself planning out the perfect week of missionary discussions, or mapping out the exact script for a challenging family conversation, only to feel a wave of anxiety wash over you? It’s easy, when we’re so eager to *do* the work, to feel like we have to have every single thing under control. We want to be the best disciples, the most prepared, the most knowledgeable.

But what if the greatest strength we can show—whether we are in the MTC, serving in the field, or simply studying at home—is the willingness to let go of the steering wheel?

The Divine Art of Yielding

Recently, I was pondering a talk that really struck a chord regarding the guidance of the Holy Ghost. It spoke to the tension between our own diligent efforts and the divine direction. It’s a delicate balance, isn't it? We are taught to be proactive, to study, to prepare, to *act*. And we should! But there’s a profound difference between preparation and self-determination.

The speaker highlighted that when we try to regulate our lives based solely on our own will, we often end up with a disappointing experience—a sense that our best efforts just aren't clicking into place. This isn't a critique of our effort; it's a gentle nudge toward a higher source of power.

Think about the gift of the Spirit. It’s not just a feeling; it’s a *force*—a constant, available resource. As we learn to rely on the Spirit, we realize that He doesn't just offer advice; He offers companionship, advocacy, and power. He can work in us, refining us into the image of Christ, a process that, as the talk noted, is lifelong.

The Spirit's Unique Ministry

One of the most powerful takeaways was understanding the Spirit's unique capacity to work. Jesus taught that while He could be in one place at a time, the Spirit can be everywhere at once, touching every individual heart with tailored messages. This speaks directly to our role as internet missionaries and disciples everywhere. The Spirit knows what *you* need right now, even if you don't know it yourself.

This realization is liberating! It means that when we feel overwhelmed by the sheer scope of the work—the need to teach, the need to convert, the need to build Zion—our job isn't to carry the entire load. Our job is to cultivate the deep, consistent relationship with the Comforter.

It reminds me of our own journey. There were times in the field where my own plans felt rigid, almost like I was reciting facts from a manual rather than sharing the truth through the Spirit. I had to intentionally slow down, stop *trying* so hard, and simply ask, "What do you need me to do right now?"

A Little Skill for Our Next Outing

If you take one thing away from this reflection, let it be this: When you feel the urge to *control* the outcome of a conversation—whether it’s with an investigator, a friend, or even a family member—pause. Take a breath. Instead of leading with your next prepared point, ask the Spirit to guide your *listening*. Be present for the question, and trust that the Spirit will illuminate the answer, rather than you having to manufacture it.

This week, let's practice this. When you are in a scripture study or even just having a casual chat, make a conscious effort to listen for the *need* behind the words, and then ask the Spirit to guide your response. That is true discipleship in action.

If you want to deepen this study, I highly recommend checking out the latest insights on the Book Club in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful place to wrestle with these concepts alongside others. Or, if you’d rather work through the tough questions yourself, check out Davee. He’s ready to walk you through how to answer those deep investigator questions with grace and reliance on the Spirit.

Remember, we are not meant to carry the weight of the work alone. We are disciples who are *empowered* by the Spirit. Let Him lead!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Holy Ghost is the one uniquely tasked with over-coming people from sin, righteousness, and judgment, and He does this successfully.

Jesus was in a physical body and could only be in one place at a time; the Holy Spirit can be everywhere simultaneously, working in every individual.

We should not try to do the work of the Spirit, nor should we try to convince others of the gospel ourselves; that is the Spirit's task.
