Letting Go: Trading Our Control for Divine Assurance

Sometimes the hardest part of discipleship is learning to truly 'let go' and trust the Lord's timing and plan.

There are moments in the journey—whether you’re knee-deep in mission prep, navigating the complexities of a new assignment, or just wrestling with a quiet doubt at home—when the natural instinct is to grab the reins. We want the answers *now*. We want the Lord’s help, but we want it filtered through our own perfectly organized, manageable plan. It’s a natural human impulse, isn't it?

It feels so much easier to be the manager of the miracle than the recipient of it. We want to be in control, even when we are asking for divine intervention. This tension between our need for control and the reality of divine sovereignty is something I’ve wrestled with, and I know many of you in the Rogue Disciples community feel it deeply.

The scriptures, and the lived counsel of the Brethren, constantly point us back to the same beautiful, yet challenging, principle: surrender. We are called to be disciples, and part of discipleship means learning to exchange our fragile grip on 'how' for the boundless assurance of 'who.'

The Illusion of Control

The message from Psalm 55:22—“Cast thy burden upon the Lord; and he shall himself build thee up: he shall never suffer to be multiplied thy reproach.”—is so profound because it speaks directly to this struggle. It’s a gentle but firm invitation to drop the weight we’ve been carrying, the weight of expectation, the weight of 'what if.'

When we try to solve everything through our own sheer willpower or careful planning, we risk becoming exhausted, and worse, we risk missing the quiet, guiding whisper of the Spirit. We think we need to have all the answers ready for the next missionary discussion, or that we need to have every scripture verse memorized for the next Book Club. We try to manage the spiritual curriculum ourselves.

Making the Transfer

What does it actually *look* like to "deliver" our problems? It’s not a single, dramatic moment of surrender; it’s a daily practice. It’s the conscious choice, when anxiety flares up or when a situation feels insurmountable, to pause and say, "Lord, I cannot hold this. I give this to You."

This isn't passive resignation; it’s active faith. It is trusting that the Lord, who has the power to build us up, is infinitely more capable than our best efforts. He doesn't just fix the problem; He builds *us* through the process of trusting Him with the problem. That's where the real strength, the kind that lasts beyond the next transfer or assignment, is forged.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: The 'Hand-Off' Question

As we continue our preparation for the field, I want to give you a small tool for your personal study or even for future missionary discussions. When you feel yourself getting bogged down in a hypothetical 'what if' scenario—a tough question an investigator might ask, or a logistical problem—I want you to practice the 'Hand-Off' question. Instead of answering it immediately with your prepared talking points, pause, and ask yourself: "What is the *first* thing I need to hand over to the Spirit in this moment?"

This simple pause forces you to shift from *performing* knowledge to *receiving* guidance. It’s a physical act of trust that primes your spirit for the Spirit’s answers.

Remember, brothers and sisters, we are not meant to carry the weight of the world, or even the weight of our own perfect understanding. We are disciples, and our greatest work is learning to bear the weight of our trust in Him.

If this message resonated with you, I encourage you to take some time this week to reflect on one area where you are currently trying to manage things on your own. Make the transfer. Keep that confidence in the Lord. He is faithful, and He never leaves His children.

If you are looking for deeper study on these principles, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on faith found in the Iron Rod library. For those who enjoy structured learning, joining a local Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces can be a wonderful way to wrestle with these concepts together. And for those who like to explore the hard questions, don't forget to check out Davee—he's always ready to walk you through the toughest investigator questions!

Frequently Asked Questions

The core message is to cast our burdens upon the Lord, trusting that He will help us and never allow us to fail.

It is an active faith choice—a conscious decision to trust the Lord's plan rather than relying solely on our own willpower or perfect management.

When feeling anxious or unprepared, pause and ask yourself: 'What is the first thing I need to hand over to the Spirit in this moment?'
