Living by Christ's Standard: More Than Just Rules

Paul reminds us that our standard for living isn't found in external laws, but in the holiness and love Christ established for us.

Sometimes, when we're deep in study—whether it’s wrestling with a difficult scripture passage or preparing for missionary discussions—it feels like we’re building up a mountain of necessary knowledge. We focus on the *what*: what commandments, what doctrines, what perfect understanding we need to convey.

But as returned missionaries, as disciples who have seen the Spirit move in the field, we know that the deepest preparation isn't just about knowing the facts. It’s about embodying the standard. It’s about the *how*.

I was recently studying Colossians, and Mike Mazzalongo’s lesson really hit home on this. Paul isn't just giving a list of "don'ts"; he’s painting a picture of a whole new way of life—a life flowing directly from the preeminent teachings of Jesus Christ. It’s a beautiful, powerful reminder that the gospel isn't a checklist we tick off to earn favor; it’s a transformation that redefines everything.

More Than Just Performance: Chosen and Beloved

Paul addresses the Judaizers—those who were trying to convince the early believers that they weren't "good enough" unless they followed every earthly ritual. It’s a familiar feeling, isn't it? The feeling that we are somehow lacking, that we need one more thing, one more perfect action, to finally measure up to the divine standard.

But Paul’s response, echoing through the ages, is a powerful rebuttal: "No. You are not defined by what you lack. You are defined by who you are in Him."

When Paul calls them "chosen of God, holy, and beloved," he’s not giving them a status they have to *earn* by adhering to a set of external laws. He’s reminding them of their inherent identity in Christ. As disciples, we need to constantly anchor ourselves to that truth. We are chosen because of the Atonement, not because of our current level of perfect adherence to every commandment.

The Standard of Christ's Teachings

If our identity is secure in Him, what does that look like day-to-day? Paul outlines this "new standard." It’s not just about avoiding the big sins; it’s about the *pursuit* of holiness in the small things. It’s about gracious speech, pursuing truthfulness, and cultivating a heart that reflects the Savior’s love.

Think about the elements Paul mentions: putting on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and longsuffering. These aren't abstract virtues; they are active choices we make when we are tired, when we are stressed, when the culture around us is shouting the opposite message. They are the daily practice of being Christlike.

This is the heart of the internet missionary life. We are constantly in the field, whether that field is our living room, our workplace, or a digital conversation. We have to live by this standard—the standard of Christ's teachings—so that when we speak, our lives testify.

This passage is a masterclass in discipleship. It moves us from theological understanding (Christ's preeminence) to practical application (how we speak, how we treat our companions, how we approach our studies).

If you are feeling the pressure of keeping up the "perfect" image—the perfect study habits, the perfect testimony, the perfect record—take heart. Remember that the foundation is already laid: you are chosen, you are holy, and you are beloved. From there, we build the daily habits of discipleship.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: The "So" Comma

Notice how Paul uses that little "so" comma at the beginning of the key declaration. It functions like a logical bridge: "If all the preceding statements are true (Christ is preeminent, His teachings are supreme), *therefore* this must follow (we must live this way)." When you feel overwhelmed in your studies or in your preparation, pause and ask yourself: "What is the logical conclusion of the gospel I've been taught? What does that *require* of me today?" Let that truth guide your next action.

If you want to walk through some of the tougher questions—like, "But what about cultural expectations?" or "How do I reconcile law with grace?"—I encourage you to bring those to Davee. He's ready to guide you through the hard questions as your AI Investigator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paul uses this term to remind the believers that their standing before God is based on being chosen by Him, not on their own adherence to specific laws or rituals, countering false teachings of superiority.

It is a life characterized by personal holiness, actively pursuing virtues like sexual purity, gracious speech, and truthfulness, all flowing from Christ's teachings.

By constantly anchoring yourself to the truth of your identity as 'chosen and beloved,' and allowing that truth to guide your daily choices in speech and action, making your life a testimony.
