Understanding and managing your ingredients is crucial for consistent and delicious sourdough baking. Whether you're experimenting with unique flour blends or perfecting your signature inclusions, this guide will empower you to take control of your ingredient profiles.
Why Manage Ingredients in BreadUp?
BreadUp’s ingredient management system allows you to create a digital library of your frequently used components. This is particularly useful when dealing with custom flour blends, unique inclusions, or when you need to precisely track the composition of your ingredients. It ensures consistency and simplifies recipe development.
Adding a New Ingredient
Let's start with adding a new ingredient. There are several ways to access the ingredient creation area: from the homepage, the quick access menu, or within your 'My Ingredients' list. Once you've located the 'Add New Ingredient' button, a new page will appear where you can define your ingredient’s properties.
- Name: Give your ingredient a clear and descriptive name.
- Composition: This is where you define the percentage breakdown of water, solids, sugar, fat, and (optionally) alcohol. Remember, all values are expressed as percentages, so they should add up to 100%. If an ingredient doesn’t contain a particular component (like alcohol in a non-alcoholic flour), enter '0'.
- Inclusion: An 'inclusion' is an ingredient incorporated into the dough, such as nuts, seeds, or dried fruit. Select ‘Yes’ if your ingredient falls into this category. If you're unsure what an inclusion is, click the information icon for a detailed explanation.
Once you’ve entered all the details, click ‘Save’. Your newly created ingredient will appear in the 'All Ingredients' list, identifiable by a black circle next to it. Existing BreadUp ingredients will not have this circle.
Modifying Existing Ingredients
Need to adjust an ingredient’s composition? Head to ‘My Ingredients,’ find the ingredient you want to change, and click the pencil icon. A modification window will appear, allowing you to adjust the name, composition, and inclusion status. Important: You can only modify ingredients that you have personally created. BreadUp’s existing ingredients are read-only and can be copied to create your own variations.
Deleting Ingredients
To remove an ingredient, go to ‘My Ingredients,’ locate the ingredient, and click the trash can icon. You'll be prompted to confirm the deletion. Crucially, if the ingredient is already used in a recipe, deleting it will also remove it from that recipe. Always double-check before deleting to avoid disrupting your existing recipe workflows!
