Level Up Your Sourdough Business & Baking: Answers to Your Top Questions

Welcome back to Crusty Cravings! I'm Hannah, a sourdough microbaker and educator based in Fort Myers, Florida. I've been running my business for almost two years, and in this video, I’m tackling questions from my Instagram followers about growing a microbakery, maintaining a healthy starter, and baking with fresh flour – topics many of you are curious about!

Marketing Your Microbakery: Building a Client Base

One of the biggest themes from your questions was marketing. How do you build a client base when you're just starting out? My approach might be a bit different, as I initially ran my microbakery as a side hustle alongside a full-time corporate job. It’s crucial to remember that a microbakery isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme; it requires investment and consistent effort. I relied heavily on word-of-mouth initially, selling to friends and family. While this is a great starting point, it’s not a sustainable long-term strategy. To reach a wider audience, I recommend several tactics: * **Embrace Social Media:** Don't worry about looking 'cringey' – be consistent! Post regularly, even if it feels awkward at first. Fake it 'til you make it! As I started, I was acting like I had thousands of followers, even with just a hundred. This confidence helped build credibility. * **Utilize Location Tags:** Tag your location in every post. This is a powerful way to reach people in your area and those who know someone in your area. * **Consider an Ordering Platform:** When managing a growing number of orders, platforms like Hot Plate can be a lifesaver. They offer predictable ordering windows, text message reminders, and the ability to manage multiple pickup locations. * **Offer Samples:** Giving away free samples is a fantastic way to introduce your bread to potential customers.

Starter Care: Keeping Your Levain Thriving

Many of your questions revolved around starter maintenance. Remember that consistency is key! A healthy starter is the foundation of delicious sourdough.

Baking with Fresh Flour: Unlocking New Flavors

Experimenting with fresh flour can significantly elevate your bread's flavor and texture. Different flours have different characteristics, so be prepared to adjust your hydration and fermentation times accordingly.

Scaling Your Business: A Slow and Steady Approach

My biggest piece of advice is to scale slowly. It’s tempting to jump into a large-scale operation, but taking the time to get comfortable with bulk baking is essential. Avoid taking on more than you can handle and always practice before you start selling.
