Military Firearms: A Collector's Obsession with Will Dabbs, MD

Let’s be honest, most of us have a hobby. Some chase trout, others restore classic cars. But for a select few, the pursuit of historical iron is the driving force. And when that pursuit combines a genuine passion for history with a deep understanding of firearms, you get someone like Will Dabbs, MD. He’s a regular contributor to Guns Magazine, and he’s got a collection that’ll make your Garand Thumb twitch. This episode of the Guns Magazine Podcast dives into that passion, and it's a worthwhile listen for anyone with an interest in military history and the firearms that shaped it.

Dabbs doesn't shy away from admitting his collection is an “addiction.” He traces his fascination back to childhood, fueled by a family history steeped in military service. It's not just about owning guns, it’s about holding a piece of history, understanding the engineering and evolution of these tools of war, and appreciating the stories they represent. He discusses the genesis of his obsession, starting with a simple Daisy BB gun and evolving into a diverse collection of military arms.

The conversation touches on practical aspects of collecting – where to find these pieces (without breaking the bank!), what to look for when acquiring them, and the importance of preservation. Dabbs' experience as a physician clearly informs his methodical approach to collecting, applying a similar level of detail and research to his firearms as he does to his medical practice. It's a refreshing perspective that elevates the hobby beyond mere acquisition.

For those new to the world of military firearms collecting, Dabbs offers a valuable starting point. He emphasizes that it doesn't require a massive budget or an encyclopedic knowledge base. Start with an area of interest – perhaps a specific conflict or nation – and build from there. The key is to appreciate the history and significance of each piece.

This episode also serves as a reminder of the increasing importance of secure platforms for those of us who value the Second Amendment. The ongoing efforts to silence dissenting voices and deplatform content related to firearms are a serious concern. Sovereign.ink and the Gun Show community represent a vital alternative, a place where these conversations can continue without fear of censorship. It’s a community built on shared values and a commitment to defending our constitutional rights.

Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting to explore the world of military firearms, this episode is a valuable resource. It's a glimpse into the mind of a passionate enthusiast and a reminder of the rich history that surrounds us. So, what are you waiting for? Dive in and start building your own collection.
