Navigating the Covenants: Understanding God's Unfolding Plan
We dove into the big questions about covenants, exploring the difference between the Mosaic and New Covenants, and what it means for us today.
Brothers and sisters, fellow disciples—it feels like we are always wrestling with the big theological questions, doesn't it? We’re out here in the field, in our homes, in our online study groups, constantly trying to grasp the sweep of eternity. Sometimes, when we’re studying the scriptures, a question pops up that feels monumental—one that touches on the very structure of God's plan for fallen humanity.
This week, I was spending time reviewing some discussions about covenants, and it brought to mind the excellent lead question from Pastor David Guzik’s recent Q&A: *When did the Old Covenant end?*
It’s the kind of question that makes you stop, take a deep breath, and remember that nothing in the gospel is simple enough to be taken lightly. We talk so much about the New Covenant—the perfect, atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ—that it’s easy to get fuzzy on the transition points. Was it the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD? Was it the last sacrifice? It’s a deep dive, one that requires us to remember that God’s plan unfolds in magnificent, deliberate stages.
What I appreciated about listening to this discussion was the focus on the *covenants* themselves—the promises God made. Pastor David was careful to distinguish between the major covenants: the one with Abraham, the one with Israel, the one with David, and then the overarching New Covenant. He pointed out that the Sinai Covenant, or Mosaic Covenant, was a formal agreement between Yahweh and Israel, built around the Law. And notice the language there, the commitment: the people responding, “All the words which the Lord has said we will do.”
As we, as disciples, learn to be Internet missionaries, we are constantly being asked to explain these foundational truths. We are asked, “How does this all fit together?” It’s not just about knowing the dates; it’s about understanding the *pattern* of God’s grace moving us from one stage of revelation to the next, always pointing us toward the ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
This is where the power of the Spirit comes in. The Law was perfect for its time, teaching us sin, but it couldn't save us. The New Covenant, sealed by the blood of Christ, is what makes us clean and brings us life. It’s a beautiful progression, designed to guide us, the Saints, right to the Savior.
A Little Prep Skill: Thinking in Covenants
As you prepare for your own missionary discussions, or even just when teaching a friend, try this: When discussing a doctrine, don't just state the truth. Frame it as part of a larger story—a covenant progression. For instance, when talking about baptism, don't just list the requirements; explain that it’s the fulfillment of the covenant promises made through the prophets, pointing to the ultimate covenant sealed by Jesus.
It’s about seeing the thread woven through all of scripture. It’s about realizing that every commandment, every prophecy, every sacrifice, was leading us, gently but surely, to the Savior.
