Navigating the Deep Waters: Understanding the Divine Unity

Brother, Sister, if you’ve ever found yourself deep in missionary discussions, wrestling with the core doctrines of our restored gospel, you know that nothing is more sacred—or sometimes more confusing—than the nature of God. We are taught that God is one, yet we are taught that He is revealed in three distinct, co-equal, and co-eternal persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. It’s a concept that has challenged the greatest minds, and frankly, it challenges us disciples every single day.

Lately, I’ve been spending time reviewing some external resources, and a question kept surfacing: Are God and Jesus the same person? It’s a question that comes up everywhere, and it’s one that requires us to be diligent students of the word, relying not on feeling, but on revelation and scripture.

When we approach these topics, especially when we’re preparing for missionary discussions or trying to understand what we’ll teach in a Book Club setting, we have to be careful not to fall into heresies that obscure the beautiful, glorious truth of the Restoration. The Spirit guides us to truth, but we must also be equipped with the right theological framework.

Understanding the Trinity: One God, Three Persons

The core teaching, which is the best explanation for all the biblical evidence, is the doctrine of the Trinity. It’s not that we are saying three separate gods; that would be polytheism. We are affirming that there is only one God, but that God eternally exists in three distinct, yet inseparable, persons. They are one in essence, one in nature, but three in personhood.

Think of it like this: the Father is not the same person as the Son, and the Son is not the same person as the Holy Ghost. Yet, when they act together—as they did in the Atonement—they are acting as one unified divine purpose. The Father sends the Son, the Son redeems, and the Spirit testifies. They are always in complete agreement.

This distinction is vital. To understand the difference between the three persons is to understand the fullness of the Godhead, which is a magnificent revelation!

The Father, through the Son, made it possible for the Holy Ghost to testify of the Father. Keep the focus on the Atonement, and the doctrine becomes less abstract and more personal.
