Navigating the Shadow: Understanding God's Sovereignty Amidst Evil

This is one of the hardest questions we face in our discipleship: Why does a good God allow suffering? We'll walk through the challenging theology together.

Brothers and sisters, as we continue our journey together in the vineyard—whether we’re in the MTC, out in the field, or right here in our living rooms as Internet missionaries—there will come days when the weight of the world feels too heavy. We’ll hear stories of incredible goodness, miracles, and divine timing. But then, the questions come. The ones that keep you awake at 3 AM. The ones that challenge the very foundation of our faith.

Nothing is harder to wrestle with than the question: Why does God allow evil? Why does God let bad things happen?

It’s a question that has stumped the greatest minds and the most devout souls throughout history. It’s a point of theology that requires us to lean hard on the Spirit and study the scriptures diligently. If we don't wrestle with this, we risk building our testimonies on sand.

When we approach this topic, it’s easy to get lost in the debate, to feel like we need to win an argument rather than seek understanding. But remember what we are doing here: we are disciples, learning to follow the Savior, not passing a seminary exam. Our goal is to deepen our love and trust in Him.

I recently reviewed some excellent material that tackles this head-on, laying out the attributes of God—His holiness, His righteousness, His sovereignty—and then methodically walking through the philosophical hurdles. It’s a deep dive, but one that ultimately points us back to the beautiful reality of our plan of salvation.

What struck me most, as I was reviewing the transcript, was the discussion around free will. The idea that for us to have meaningful relationships with Him, we had to be given the capacity to choose—the ability to choose good *or* evil. That choice, that genuine agency, is what makes our covenants meaningful. If God simply programmed us to only choose right, we wouldn't be disciples; we’d be automatons.

The challenge, then, is accepting that in a world where we have real choices, those choices have real, sometimes painful, consequences. We are living in a world under a curse, yes, but it is a world where redemption is possible through repentance and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

It’s a reminder, isn't it, that being Christlike isn't about being shielded from hardship; it's about learning to navigate the *reality* of the world while keeping our focus fixed on the Savior who overcame it all. It requires us to look beyond the immediate pain to the eternal promise of restoration.

A Little Mission Prep Insight: Embracing the "Why"

As we prepare to share the gospel, we will inevitably meet investigators who ask the toughest questions. Don't be afraid when they ask, "Why does God let bad things happen?" Don't try to give a perfect, philosophical answer off the cuff. Instead, gently pivot the conversation back to the Savior. Acknowledge the difficulty of the question, affirm that it's a valid concern, and then invite them to study it with you. You can say, "That is a profound question, and I don't have the perfect answer right now, but I'd love for us to look at what the scriptures say about it together." That invitation to study is the work in action!

Deepening Our Study Together

If this topic resonated with you, or if you want to continue wrestling with the deep doctrines of the plan of salvation, I highly recommend looking into the recommended reading mentioned in the video's description—Norman L. Geisler's work on this topic. It’s a solid intellectual companion piece.

For those of us who are already engaged in deep study, I encourage you to check out the Book Club in HolyPlaces, or join a Bible Study Group. There are so many layers of scripture-discipleship waiting for us!

For those who are just starting to feel the pull of the Spirit, if you haven't already, join our free weekly Disciple Challenge. It’s a low-stakes, high-reward way to practice sharing the gospel with your neighbors.

Keep pressing forward, my friends. We are called to be disciples *everywhere*, and that includes the toughest questions life throws our way. The Spirit will guide us.

Frequently Asked Questions

The video suggests that God has chosen to create a 'real' world where choices have real consequences, allowing time for repentance through the Atonement.

The video suggests this solution would lose its attractiveness because God's intervention would infringe on things we are willing to let slide, like 'lesser-evil' actions.

God is purposely 'delaying' to allow more time for people to repent so that He will not need to condemn them.
