As we continue in our journey as rogue disciples, we learn that the work isn't just about showing up; it’s about being *equipped* to stand. When I was first learning to navigate the deep waters of missionary discussions, I thought preparation meant knowing every doctrine, every answer. But I learned that true preparation is about putting on the right spiritual gear.

The Apostle Paul gave us the ultimate guide in Ephesians 6. It’s not a suggestion; it’s an instruction manual for spiritual warfare. It reminds us that the conflict isn't with people, but with the adversary, and therefore, our weapons must be spiritual.

The Blueprint for Standing Firm

When we look closely at the passage, it’s so deliberate. It’s not just a list; it’s a sequence of necessary actions. We can’t just grab the sword and think we’re ready. We have to start with the foundation.

Think about it: the first piece is the Belt of Truth. Why is that first? Because everything else—our righteousness, our faith, our very ability to stand—must be anchored to what is true. Satan is the father of lies, so our first defense, and our first focus, must be on truth, both for our own sanctification and for those we are trying to help.

Then comes the Breastplate of Righteousness. This is perhaps the most misunderstood piece. It is absolutely *not* about how many good deeds we rack up to earn God’s favor. No, it’s the imputed righteousness of Christ, received through faith. It guards our hearts against the accusations—the subtle whispers that tell us we haven't done enough, that we’re not worthy. That’s the enemy’s favorite attack!

And our feet? The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace. This speaks to readiness. It means we are prepared to advance—to step into the uncomfortable places, the challenging conversations, the places where the Spirit whispers, "Go." We advance not with fear, but with the message of grace.

This is what we use when we are ready to teach, when we are ready to testify, when we are ready to defend the gospel with clarity and conviction. It reminds me so much of my own time in the MTC, where I learned that knowing the scriptures wasn't just for passing tests; it was for *living* by them.

And let’s not forget the essential element that underpins everything: Prayer. Without reliance upon God, all our efforts are empty. Prayer is how we draw the strength to keep putting on the armor day after day.
