Putting Our Houses in Order: A Lesson in Divine Timing

Sometimes we pray for more time, but true discipleship means accepting God's timing and preparing our hearts for whatever He reveals.

Brothers and sisters, have you ever found yourselves praying so earnestly for just a little more time? Maybe it’s a little more time with family, a little more time to finish a project, or perhaps just a little more time to feel the Spirit’s gentle prompting to press forward in the work.

It’s a natural human inclination, isn't it? When faced with difficulty or the prospect of change, our first instinct is often to plead with Heavenly Father, "Please, just a little longer." We want to negotiate with the divine plan, believing that a few more years of comfort or opportunity will somehow change the ultimate outcome.

Recently, I was pondering a passage from Isaiah that really struck me, and it speaks directly to this tension between our desires and the Lord’s perfect will. We’re looking at King Hezekiah, a man who, by all accounts, was a man of God who did right in the eyes of the Lord. Yet, when the prophet approached him, the message was stark: he was ill, and death was coming.

The Weight of the Proclamation

When we read the account, it’s clear that Hezekiah prayed for more time. It’s a deeply relatable moment. We all want to delay the inevitable, to keep the curtain drawn on the final chapter. But the lesson that surfaces, the one that echoes through the centuries, is about submission—about accepting what the Lord reveals, not arguing with the revelation itself.

The prophet’s message wasn't just a prognosis; it was a directive: “Put your house in order.” Think about that. Before the final curtain, before the life force begins to fade, the Lord gives you the opportunity to organize. To settle accounts. To say the things that need to be said, and to accomplish the things that must be done for the sake of the covenant.

Putting Our House in Order

This isn't just about wills and earthly possessions, though those things have their place. When we talk about "putting our house in order" from a discipleship perspective, we are talking about our *hearts*. Are we living in a way that honors the covenant we have made with our Heavenly Father? Are we actively building our testimonies? Are we preparing our hearts to receive the fullness of the Spirit, regardless of how long we have?

If we approach life—and indeed, if we approach our missionary efforts—with the mindset of, "I'll get to that later," we risk missing the divine window. The opportunity to be a disciple anywhere, all the time, is always present, but it requires a willingness to act *now* on what we know to be true.

A Bite-Sized Testimony on Acceptance

My own experience has taught me that the peace that comes from accepting God's timing—His plan, His revelations, His will—is unmatched. When we stop trying to manage God’s schedule and instead focus on maximizing the blessings He *is* giving us today, we find a profound sense of peace. We learn to praise Him not just for the blessings, but for the *lesson* in the blessing.

Invitation to Continue the Work

This principle—that the word of God is good, and His purposes are always best—is the bedrock of our journey as rogue disciples. It’s the same principle that guides our efforts in the field, whether we are in the MTC, serving in a stake center, or even just in our living rooms.

If you are feeling the weight of your own "house" needing tidying up—whether it's in your personal study habits, your temple attendance, or your willingness to share the gospel—I invite you to join us. We are hosting a free weekly Disciple Challenge this week. It’s a low-stakes, high-impact way to focus on one scripture principle and apply it immediately. Come join us, or if you prefer deep dives into scripture, check out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces!

Keep studying, keep gathering Israel, and remember that the best preparation is the one we do today, with the Spirit’s promptings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spiritually, it means organizing our hearts and lives to align with the covenant, accomplishing what needs to be done for the sake of the gospel before we are called to leave this life.

Because trying to negotiate or change God's plans can lead to distress. Accepting His timing allows us to focus on the eternal principles He is revealing to us right now.
