Receiving the Blessing: More Than Just Good Feelings

Sometimes, when we’re knee-deep in the work—whether we’re studying for missionary discussions, preparing for transfers, or just trying to live out our covenants here on the Sovereign—we get a certain idea of what a 'blessing' looks like. We picture sunshine, ease, and maybe a quiet cup of coffee with no worries in sight.

But if you’ve spent any time in the field, or if you’ve been through the intensity of MTC, you know that the reality of the Spirit often requires more than just comfort. It requires *keeping*. It requires the Lord’s face to shine, even when things are messy.

I was recently revisiting the blessing given to Aaron and his sons in Numbers 6. It’s a passage so rich, it feels like a roadmap for discipleship itself. It’s easy to skim over it, but if we slow down and really unpack what each phrase means, it becomes a profound reminder of the depth of the covenant relationship we have with our Heavenly Father.

The Three-Fold Nature of Blessing

The blessing reads: “The Lord bless you, and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

It’s a beautiful, rhythmic repetition, and the transcript pointed out something vital: this doesn't prove the Trinity, but it beautifully illustrates the interconnectedness of the Godhead in our blessings. It’s a divine process!

1. Bless and Keep (The Foundation)

The first part, "The Lord bless you, and keep you," is our anchor. We often focus on the 'blessing' part—the good things coming our way. But the emphasis on being *kept* is what truly grounds us. We all know what it’s like to be kept by our own desires, or perhaps by the comfort of routine, or even by bitterness. To be kept by the Lord, however, means something active—it means His sustaining power is surrounding us, ensuring our peace and success, even when we stumble.

2. Shine and Be Gracious (The Visibility)

Next, we have the shining face and the graciousness. To know that God looks upon you—that His face shines—is perhaps the greatest gift. It’s not a reward for perfection; it’s the acknowledgment of your covenant relationship through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It’s knowing that His loving attention is fixed on you. And grace? That’s His tender mercy, the divine willingness to overlook our shortcomings because of the Savior.

3. Countenance and Peace (The Wholeness)

Finally, "The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." The word for peace here, *Shalom*, is so much more than just the absence of conflict. It speaks to wholeness, completeness, and total satisfaction—the Abundant Life Jesus promised. When the Lord lifts His countenance, it means His full, loving attention is upon us, resulting in that deep, abiding *Shalom*.

It’s a beautiful cycle: He blesses us, He keeps us secure, He shines His light on us, He shows His mercy, He looks upon us with His full attention, and He gives us peace.

And remember the promise at the end: "so they shall put my name on the children of Israel and I will bless them." Our lives, our service, our discipleship—they are meant to bear the name of the Lord. That promise is what motivates us to keep showing up, to keep learning, and to keep ministering.
